POLITICS AND POLITICIANS. One of the largest political meetings we have ever witnessed in California assembled in front of the City Hotel in this town on Monday evening last. It was called without distinction of party, " to hear the report of the delegates to the constitutional convention lately assembled at Monterey, and to consider matters connected with the approaching general election." A nominating committee of nine persons was then appointed to prepare a legislative ticket for the district, after which the meeting was addressed by Messrs Sherwood, Steuart, McDougal, Tingley, Kewen, Gilbert, Morse and Snyder. The meeting then adjourned, to meet again on Tuesday evening following. At an early hour on Tuesday evening, an assemblage was congregated at the City Ho tel to hear the report of the committee. Death of Capt Wm H. Warner.—We extract the following account of the melancholy fate of this gentleman from the " Alta California" : Captain Warner left Sacramento City in August last, escorted by a strong body of Infantry, for the purpose of exploration, but more especially to ascertain whether or not the Sierra Nevada were passable by the ordinary grade of railways. His course lay up the main valley of the Sacramento to Deer Creek. where the main escort with wagons were left. and the captain with 30 men pushed on the Peter Lossen trail to Grove Lake. near Pitts River, one of the principal affluents of the Sacramento. Here the emigrant trail crosses the dividing ridge of the mountain by a steep and difficult ascent, so that it became necessary to search for a better pass. A camp was established under charge of Lieut. Williams*n, and Capt. Warner detached eight men, well mounted and armed. with his guide, skirted the Goose Lake and thence following the valley of a small stream emptyi...

The Election of the 13th—The Candidates.— There can be but one opinion as to the importance of the coming election. On this Election depends in a great measure the position this embryo State will assume in the great confederation of the Union. The constitution, as recently presented to the people by the delegates they sent to Monterey, will unquestionably be adopted ; for, taking the instrument as a whole, we have as yet heard no dissent. There are portions of it that will be objected to by some. That constitution has not yet been put on paper, which, in some of its details, did not meet with opposition. Such will always be the case as long as community possesses free-thinkers; and there is little question but what Americans do think for themselves. But in regard to officers to be elected, no man can speak with any degree of certainly as to the result. Let us first look at the candidates for Governor The names of three gentlemen are conspicuously before the people for this important...
