The Washington Hovvitzm. —Lieu tenant Ives, the architect and engineer in charge of the Washington National Monument, has made an official report to the Secretary, to which he Says that when raised to the hcighth of 6<H> feet, the entire weight of the shaft and foundation will he 70,000 tons. The weight of the structure in its present condition is 40,---000 tons. He has been unable to detect any a] pearanca of settling or insecurity. By scientist calculations, he has arrived at the conclusion that the weight alone of the monument at its fall ncighfh, would offer a resistance nearly eiglrtf times greater, than the overturning eiTort of the heaviest tempest to which it would probabl) ever be exposed. It was proposed b> the Monument Society many years 8£;o to surround the foot of the ofiellsk with v base of pantheon form, and an engraving was made of the monument as it would appear if completed in accordance with that plan. The Senatorial Question. [Newspaper Article] — Tulare County Record — 1 October 1859

The Senatorial Question. The duty devolves upon Governor Weller ti fill the vacancy occasioned by the demise c Hon. David C. Broderick, and there seems f be speculative opinions as to whom will be thi fortunate recipient of Senatorial honors. Wi notice in some of our exchanges the names o R. Aug. Thompson and V. E. Howard, am ' have heard several others favorably spoken of Gen. Denver would probably have received th< appointment, had he desired it, but a determi nation on his part to be a candidate for thai position next winter, deterred him. The appointment being onh ad in {,yim. and the person receiving such appointment, having nocer tainty of an election at the hands oi the next | Legislature, it is but too apparent to the farI seeing tlie position must he ephemeral, j We are not infallible, and to deny a pre- ! ferenrc of men for certain official position, 1 would be in contravention ,to our nature? aud profession.
