Lo, the Poor Indian. When tie Indian Appropriation Bill was before Congress last session, the House of Representatives cut down from 120,000 to 20,000 dollars, an appropriation which the Senate had adopted, for protecting the Indians in California. A committee of conference was chosen between the Senate und House, of which Mr. Gwin of Calfornia, was chairman. Mr. Gwin, in making his report to the Senate, said : " I must, be permitted to express the mortification which I experienced at the ignorance displayed by those who represented the House on this committee, of the subject matter of our discussions—an ignorance that I fear, if permitted to rule the proceedings of that House, will prove disastrous to the best interests of the State I in part represent here." My. Gwin said farther, in speaking of the necessity of making provision for the protection of the California Indians: " We have taken their acorns, grasshoppers, fisheries, and hunting grounds from them. The ponds where the wi...

THE ELECTION. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Star — 30 October 1852

THE ELECTION. Party has its uses and its abuses. It has its uses in the increased onergy which is brought into action, and in the organization which is required for the success of almost any measure. Its principal abuse is in the too blind adherence it requires from individuals, often at the sacrifice of principles—making them merely political slaves. The best measures are sometimes opposed merely because they are supported by a different party, and bad measures supported enly for the sake of joining with the parly. We clip the following from one of the party papers, to show what terrors are held over a man who may dare to give exercise to one of the dearest rights which a republican government bestows upon its subjects, should that -exercise be contrary to the behests of ,his party. ."Should there be a "bolter," or a man who scratches a single name in the contest, let his name be written down in your pocket .books, and "in the course of human events' 1 there may be an opportunity o...

l<Froin Souora. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Star — 30 October 1852

l<Froin Souora. A party of Sonoreuians arrived here a few days ago, having been twenty-four days on the road. At the Colorado th«y found every thing tranquil, and our troops absent on a compaigu. The aspect of affairs in Sonora is sorrowful indeed. Tits Apaches are committing depredations in the neighborhood Of Ilermosillo, and there seems now to be as great a necessity to defend the interior as there has heretofore been to protect the frontiers. A civil war has also broken out, and from tho accumulating evils the inhabitants are seeking refuge wherever their means will best carry them We have already mentioned the arrival ot a French count at Guaymas, with men and means for the purpose of making war upon the Apaches, under a contract with the Mexican government. It seems that he proceeded to the Apaohe country and succeeded in driving off the Indians from a tract fifty leagues in circuit, when he was called upon by tho military commandant of Sonora to render an account t...
