KAIEKOAD NOTES. [Newspaper Article] — San Francisco Call — 2 April 1890

KAIEKOAD NOTES. The Freight Committee Continuing at Its Work. The Freight Committee of the Transcontinental Association continued its work yesterday at the Palace Hotel in two sessions. A reduction of freight rates was decided upon various commodities, the list of which will be published 1 as soon as the Eastern roads telegraph their concurrence. In regard to the reductions made at Monday's meeting, an old resident of the citrus belt and a man engaged in orange-raising said: " It is just what we have been praying for. This reduction means an enormous saving to the fruit-growers of California. The rates before were simply outrageous, so high as to discourage men who had started on a small scale. By the time they cut once more the rates will be just where we want them." The committee appointed to arrange for the Western States Passenger Association concluded its labors in Ciiicago on Thursday last. The roads concerned are as follows: Kock Island and Burlington, Wisconsin Central. Chic...

COAL FROM JAPAN. [Newspaper Article] — San Francisco Call — 2 April 1890

COAL FROM JAPAN. The Pari It ; Has Played in the Local Market. It "Was Used Here During the Famine -A Comparison of Its Quality With That ; of Other Coals in Use.'. The telegram in yesterday's Call, announcing the presence In Chicago of a representative of a Japanese syndicate, formed with a preliminary capital of $7,000,000 to ship coal to San Francisco, has revived commercial interest in a subject that attracted considerable attention a year and half or so ago, when coal jumped to such extreme figures. Spreekels Bros, were then. tempted to make an experiment in this direction and altogether they imported from 13,000 Jto 15,000 tons, not placing any, however, on the market, but using it 'in their own refineries and steamers. The experiment proved satisfactory though, the coal being pronounced an excellent steam coal, ranking. in this respect, next after Nanaimo. It burns with great heat, gives out a good long flame, making it valuable for certain boilers, gettiug steam up quickly o...
