The Gaming Law. [Newspaper Article] — Mariposa Gazette — 19 March 1861

The Gaming Law. Mr. Editor.—ln your last paper there appeared an article which it would not, I think, be deemed offensive to assert, carried witli it conclusive proof of I the limited legal comprehension of its author. The Legislature, desirous of suppressing a roost dissipa- 1 ting practice, and putting down one of the three great evils of society, which had caused more mis- i ery, more dissipation, more bloodshed, and more ' heart burnings and sorrow than anything else, in 1 serted a clause giving District Attorneys a fee of (if ty dollars in each case of a conviction, in order to < encourage them to vigilant and prompt prosecution i of all violations of the law. But at the same time 1 the legislature provided that this fee of the District Attorney should be " collected from the properly i of the defendant;" a provision which has no other i signification or meaning than that this fee is in uo case to bo paid by the county; and i f the defendant does not pay his fine, th...

Our Mexico Correspondence. [Newspaper Article] — Mariposa Gazette — 19 March 1861

Our Mexico Correspondence. Alamos, Soxora, Mexico January 23d, 1861. ' Friend Holmes.—With a hope of rendering information that may be beneficial to persons who may think of visiting this benighted country, I will take the liberty of addressing this short letter to you, which you may publish if you think proper: We sailed from San Francisco on the 29th day of November, in the " favorite (?) Bark Maria; arrived at I.a I>a7., Lower California, on the 22d December, where we spent Christmas. Of the country I will only say that I have no doubt of its being the poor- j est country that is inhabited (its minerals excepted) on the globe. We sailed along the coast for near; three hundred miles, and bare rocks and sand hills, ; covered with Cactus, of great variety, was all we saw to recommend it. We saw none of its mines, j but were shown many rich specimens, and heard many stories of their great wealth. We arrived at Guaymas on the 3d inst. We numbered about twenty, (American pas...
