Journal of a Defeated Candidate. The following may be appropriated by hundreds of individuals who have been candidates for office: Thursday —Received the nomination for City Delegate! Surprised and indignant.— Remonstrated with committees. Was told I must place myself in the hands of my friends. Eventually did so. Friday —lmmense poster on a brick pile opposite my house; my name in two feet letters. Great anguish on the part of my wife and family, who believe that every officer of the city government must according to law be indicted and tried at the end of his term. Friends meet me In the street, say that there is a rumor about town that 1 am out for an office, which rumour ought to be publicly contradicted. Other friends offer congratulations ironically, and leave me in doubt whether the office is unfit for me, or I for the office. Old gentleman says he will not believe it; for he knew my father, and he was ■ respectable man. Saturday —Man on stoop of my house, with big stick and ...

Czapkay.—The number of those who have sacrificed the joys and pleasures of society to gratify a transitory desire for excitement has never been estimated. If they had been, the labors of those who have ventured, in spite of calumny and detraction, to confine themselves to that field of medical research, embraced under the head of chronic diseases, wuuld be much better appreciated than they have hitherto been by the world at large. The efforts of a Hicord, a Sanger, and a Czapkay— the most illustrous exponents of that branch of science are, however, dispelling the mists of prejudice which rende...

New Trial Granted to Wappner. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 31 December 1859

New Trial Granted to Wappner. Henry Wappner, now lying in the county jail, and" who was found guilty, some months since, of the murder of Louisa Yollmer, and sentenced to he hung, has been granted a new trial by the Supreme Court. The opinion is by Judge Baldwin, and is concurred in by Judges Field and Cope. It reads us follows: The defendant was convicted of the crime of murder. The main error relied on by him to reverse the judgment is, that the Court, without the consent of the defendant, gave to the jury an oral charge, after they had returned into Court for further information in respect to the law. The charge is not found in any bill of exceptions or statements of the Judge below, but it is argued by stipulation that the charge was so given, reserving, however, the point whether, as no statement or bill of exceptions was presented to the Judge within ten days, this Court can notice the point. We think that the statute directing a statement to be made within ten days, and signe...

FAKQUAR'S MEDICATED CALIFORNIA WINE li WIT! A delicious Tonic Bitten Juice of the Grape, medicated with Juniper, Rhubarb, and Peruvian Bark, lor Invalids. "Good Wine needs no »ush," BET in this age of quackery and humbug, it is necessary to at least state the virtues or qualities of even a well known article, and certainly the California Grape could lay claim to this title. 1 believe, indeed, I know from experience, that its iuice produces a purer, less hurtful, and more exhilarating and healthful beverage than nine-tenths of the stuff imported and imitated in the United States.
