I. H. JUMAW Editor. PUBLISHED EVERY SATURDAY ITEMS OF INTEREST. Personal and Literary. Mr. J. W. McDonald has nearly ompletd the statue of Gen. Custer for West Point. The attitude chosen is that of the soldier at bay surrounded by In- dians. Mr. Ruskin never advertises any of his works and never sends any copies out for review. The result is that many who want his works have difficulty in finding them. Among the other journals of that poiyglot city New York is one in the Catalan dialect called La Llumanera. Ith as reached its third volume though it seems odd that so limited a tongue should furnish patrons for it. Among the attractions of the Paris Exposition is noted a microscopies edi- ' tion of Danto bound in red velvet with silver clasp and small enough to be worn as a "charm on the watchguard" sent by an Italian publisher. The artistio sensation of Paris is an artist named Andre Gauthier.who draws nightly large audiences to see him paint a landscape in live minutes a portrait in...

gdUon and the Unseen Universe. Hitherto roan's knowledge of the ex- tent of the universe has been bounded h the limits of vision. During the day when the range of sight is narrowed by the sun's excessive brightness we see hut a minute fraction even of the little world we inhabtti At night a wider reach of vision is possible and some thousands of stellar and planetary Ldies are added to the domain of positive knowledge thus enlarging enormously man's idea of the magni- tude of the universe. But the iuorease of knowledge which darkness reveals is almost infinitesimal compared with the wider view of the universe oponed up by the telescope; and every addition to the telescope's penetrative power brings a larger and larger universe within our kon That the most powerful of telescopes enables us to reach the limit of the uni- verse no one imagines. See as much as we may more perhaps infinitely more lies beyond. So at least all experi- ence leads us to infer; but our positive knowledge ends...

I. H. JULIAN Editor. PUBLISHED EVERY SATURDAY. ITEMS OF INTEREST. Peraunal and Literary. Brain and Truth are among the strange names for London newspapers. Neither of thorn pay. The Lancet does better. Miss Emma Abbott will make her first appearance in America in the char- acter of Marguerite in Faust with the Hess Opera Company at the Park The- ater Brooklyn September 17. The writings of Saxe Holm" are thought by the Editor's Table in the September 8unday Afternoon to be by two people ; the stories by Mrs. Lucia 6. Runkle and the poems by Mrs Helen Hunt Jackson. According to theLeipsio catalogues sixteen thousand four hundred and seventy-three works were published in Germany during the year 1877. This is two thousand more than the average of the last eight years. Mr. R. B. Browning the son of the two poets is a not unskillful painter of ideal subjects. He has in the Royal Academy a picture of a Brass Worker an old man hammering on a metal plaque which has much merit. Charles Barnar...

In the Golden Bute th following directions' for educating or toudK horses: "If you have a colt to Uoh and have the habit of spoaking Iharply and loudly corroct vourself of It at once. Colts are timid high-spirited things if they are worth any thing; md be who manages them should be of ouiet habits and have a low pleasant- toned voice.
