DEER SPOTLIGHTING AUSTIN - The endless battle between poacher and lawman is expected to hit its annual peak with the opening of the deer season in November, and as usual, night spotlighters will be the most troublesome to Texas Parks and Wildlife Depart- ment game wardens. Immobilizing deer with a strong light is one of the most effective ways of gagging a deer. It also is a good way to land in jail or receive a stiff fine, or both. Spotlighting of deer has been a problem in Texas ever since game laws came into existence, and the modern-day deer poacher is just as prevalent and in some cases more difficult to catch than his predecessor, according to Game Warden Capt. William C. Walker of Austin. "More and more spot- lighters and road hunters are beginning to use citi- zens band radios and work- ing in teams to avoid getting caught," Walker said. "Some of them even try to monitor the game wardens' radio frequencies." One ploy used effectively by poachers at times is to use two CB-equ...

THE 8ACHSE SENTINEL D€C€MB€flJ979 * 6 (city council) NOVEMBER 26, 1979 GAME VIOLATIONS SOAR COLORADO CITY - It took some high speed chasing by patrol vehicles and some coaxing by Texas Parks and Wildlife Depart- ment game wardens before two Lubbock hunters came out of the woods in Mitchell County last week. Game Warden Ronnie Aston of Colorado City saw a group of poachers shoot a deer from a pickup with the aid of a spotlight. The spotlighters loaded the deer into their vehicle and tried to escape as the wardens approached. Game Warden Rue Gambol of Snyder was called for assistance in stopping the vehicle but it reached a hunting camp first. The two men jumped from the pickup and ran into an adjoining pasture. No deer were found in the pickup, but the wardens saw fresh blood and deer hair. One Colorado City man was arrested at the scene while Game Wardens Dale Pearce of Sweetwater and Danny Tuggle of Big Spring assisted in searching for two men who fled on foot. After a search, the ...

BEGINS 5TH TEAR TIE SACHSE SENTINEL NEWSPAPER HISTORY How It Started The Sachse Sentinel pub- lished the first edition of its newspaper in December, 1975, with 500 copies being printed and delivered free to each home in Sachse. Organization of the newspaper was started a few months prior to this. It was started by an organization known as CBS (Citizens For A Better Sachse). In the beginning officers were elected and several com- mittees were appointed for different jobs, some were the planning of activities, recreation, communication, and others. CBS was formed with the idea of helping Sachse in its growth, they had by-laws which were similar to a Chamber of Commerce. CBS at one time had more than 60 members devoted to a better Sachse. Joe Stone was appointed to the communication com- mittee and his responsibility was to see that the residents of Sachse were notified of news and events which happened in the city. Stone and his committee came up with the idea of a newspaper as a meth...

THE 8ACH8E SENTINEL D€C€M6<ft 1979 * PROPOSITION 13: ONE TEAR LATER California's Proposition 13, which cut property taxes by $7 billion during the last fiscal year, celebrat- ed its first anniversary on June 6, 1979. Some pre- liminary findings on the impact on various California taxpayers are already avail- able. According to an article in September, 1979 issue of Consumer Reports maga- zine, most California voters had expected homeowners to benefit most from Propo- sition 13. So far, the results have shown otherwise. According to an analysis prepared by the Revenue and Taxation Committee of the California Assembly, owner-occupied residences received only 24 percent of the $7 billion in property tax cuts ( see Table). About 40 percent went to property used for commercial pur- poses including rental property (12 percent) and commercial, industrial and agricultural property (28 percent). The remaining 36 percent wasn't really a tax cut but a tax shift from local property taxes to ...
