At the time mentioned the tast rich and rollinglf>rairies were nearly an unbroken range from which many of the early settlers derived an easy living by raising cattle, the limited farming operations being carried on along the streams and belts of timber, and confined principally to the cultivation of cotton. In this county are located over 79,000 acres of land that were sec- tionized and set apart by the State, at an early day, as a part cf an en- dowment of 222,400 acres for the building of one or more Stat? Uni- versities, and, on the 8th day of April, 1874, the Legislature passed an act providing for the sale of these lands on ten years time, fixing the mininum price at $1.50 per acre; the general average being about $3.10 per acre. The low price and easy terms of payment had the effect to put every acre of these lands in the hands of actual settlers within two years after the passage of the act. The law provides that when a per- son has filed upon an 80 or 160 acre tract of this land and paid one-tenth of the original appraisal, he may sell his "claim" to the same and his vendee receives a patent direct frotn the State on payme...

Custom Mill and Commission Mill Machinery Town Lots. ^he JjJailij JUros. DENISON. FRIDAY APRIL 5, 1878. The Two-thirds Rule. After alluding to the singular ac- tion of those more influential papers that are in the interest of Hudbard for Governor, which are so clam- orous for the retention of the two- thirds rule by the convention, the Marshal Herald says: "If the Hubbard journals felt any assurance that he was popular enough to command a majority in the convention, does any one believe that they would all at once, and with such seeming unanimity, have raised a battle cry lor the two-thirds rule, and at a time when no one was seri- ously opposing it? Why were they silent when it looked like he was the coming man?" The conclusion the Herald comes to is that the iriends of Mr. Hubbard seeing that their favorite cannot command even a majority, are now endeavoring to drag Throckmorton down with him. The Herald calls upon Throck- morton's friends to go to work in earnest, in view of this...
