9S daily mercury I TSUB3DAY, . OCT. 25, ism. Reading Matter oh every Page. THE CAMPAIGN OPEStED. Harris aud Montgomery counties are alive. They have thrown off their seeming lethargy and braoed theiaself^l for the straggle which will go on in the State until December. At Willis, the ladies —God bless them !—have been en- listed in the caa . of Democracy; over six hundred of them being present at the barbecue. The KadiealSj as we write, are pouring forth their tirades of abuse from the gallery of the Market-house of our city to a crowd of negroes, who are listening,, with gaping mouths, to the denunciatory har- angues delivered by their leaders. The contest thus commenced will be hot. None ean for a moment\ doubt that the righteous cause, which has for its motto, "Equal and correct justice to all men, of ifftatever State or persuasion, religious or political," will triumph. , _ Radical rule, which has obtained over the country for the past ten years, has culminated in bringing the fi...

Editors Hcuatoa Mercury: In your issue of the 11th irust., yourselves or others of my good Mends have been pleased to bestow upon me much greater commendation than I am entitled to, for which, however, from the kind consideration prompting it, I am now, and will always be, sincerely gratified. I beg leave to say that I have not been engaged * in the reg^feprswjtice. of medicine for many yafes, and henoe do not desire to claim the position of a physician among the eminent medical fraternity ot our district. Will yon permit me to ask the flavor of you, to correct, in print, a Slight historical, insccmsfcy in the commendatory not&fc referred to. It was Governor E. M. Pease, and not myself, who enjoyed the distinguished honor of being the secretary of the convention which declared the independence of Texas. DAILY MERCURY Reading Matter on every Page. BY TELEGRAPH. V SPECIALS TO HOUSTON MERCURY. fsiday, - - . - oct. 24, 1873. REGISTRATION. Under the law, as passed by the Thirteenth Legislature, it is made necessary for every man to regis- ter his mane with the District Clerk before he can vote. There is wisdom in the law, and it is well calculated to protect the parity of the ballot -box, and pre- vent the repetition of those frauds in ballot-staffing, so often and so successfully practised in this State in the days of the past, by the Radicals. No other registration papers will suffice for under the law. There must be an entirely new enrollment of the voters. The failure to register will not ex- empt any citizen from jury services, as was formally the case, so this excuse cannot be offered. 16 is imperatively the duty of every citizen who desires to see a good, stable and honest government once more our portion, who feels an abhorrence of the evils,'oppres- sions and tyrannies of Davis...

DAILY MERCURY t ' . - 1 EM0€BATI€ BARBECUE AT WILLIS. On Wednesday we went up to Willis, in Montgomery county, on the Great Northern Railroad, to the Democratic meeting and bar- becue there had and held. We arrived about 12 M. and found quite an assemblage of ladies and gentlemen on the grounds, some two thousand or more. A vast deal of enthusiasm prevailed and everybody, bothjadies and gentle- men, seemed heartily in earnest, manifesting an. interest and a de- termination that will insure us a fall Democratic vote in Montgom- county at the coming election, re noticed' quite a number of colored people present, all of whom were attentive listeners to the speaking, and some seeming to be thoroughly impressed with the truths and arguments ad- vanced, an impression that we hope will be lasting and that will result favorably, in so far as their votes and support is con- cerned to the Democracy. Some of the prominent white Radicals of the county were hanging around on the outskirts, looki...

- - - ~ - . -v. - DAILY MERCURY Letters from the People. Galveston, October 23, The Galveston News, in an edi- torial article in a recent number of that consistent journal, noticing the assault made upon it by CoL John H. Manly, of Houston, in the discussion upon the. Houston Al- derman bribery case, remarks as follows: . j . Aa the case of Mr. Henricks has now b«ea disposed of, we are "willing for Colonel Manly, or any one else who desires, to place the Galveston News upon trial; and we will furthermore say that they will always find us ready to denounce and expose corruption. Does the Galveston News sup- pose that Henry Henricks, of Houston, is the only guilty party who was, and is involved in the quarantine imbroglio ? When I say guilty party, I do not mean liable to indictment and punish- ment nnderthe penal code of Tex- as, but I intend that person, or those persons who are guilty, mor- ally of assenting to, and who were willing to enter into the corrupt scheme, and avail himse...

EVENING THE POLITICAL Let as contemplate for a ment the political aspect of affairs in onr unhappy State. A State of a million people—almost a nation We may say—has for fohr years, IS TFXAS. of Davis' administration^ as Gov- ernor—been agitated by the most terrible political outrages and wrongs. There is no atrocity which the tongue can syllable, the imagination conceive, which has not desolated this down-trodden land. Every passion which can degrade the hearts ot unscrupu- lous men has swept with the scath- ing terrors of a cyclone over the cities the hamlets and the homes, of Texas. A system of robbery and murder gigantic in its strength, under the color of law in the shape of a Police Bill, a Militia Bill and the power of the Gover- nor to declare martial law at his own pleasure, has seized, in many instances and in many localities, upon every species of property and turned hundreds of people out of the possession of plenty into penury and want. Fraud and corruption has been lega...
