There was an attendance of nearly fifty at tilt wined-ull dinner of the Alex andra Golf Club, held at the Commer. cial HIotel on Wednesday, October 5. Club president, Mr. Russ Walker, pro. sided. The gathering was a happy one, enjoyment prevailing throughout the evening. A sumptuous meal was par taken of, after which a short toast list was observed, all with musical honors. Amidst rhod denrons in full bloom, shining with a glowing radiance under a dull October sky, and the fragrance of lilacs, camellias, and flowering shrubs, the gardens of "Mundroola" homestead, Taggerty, the resi dence of Dr. and Mrs. Rawson, were gay with visitors from Acheron, Alexandra, Thornton, Cathkin, Rubicon, Buxton, Marys ville and Melbourne, when Mrs. C, N. Davy officially opened the fete conducted 'by T2ggerty Branch of the Country Women's Association on Oct. 12. Members were well rewarded for their work of preparation when the proceeds from gaily stocked stalls set out on the lawns; afternoon tea served among ornamental trees, and tne results of competitions, dips, an Aunt Sally and clock golf, sale of photographs of local lassies pos ing amongst the lilacs, all added up to a clear profit of £51 is. ALEXANDRA STANDARD Friday,- October 21, 1949. Varied weather was witnessed on Srturday last. During the morning-rain -fell;,followed by a pall of dust from a storm from other parts of the State, in the afternoon. The [death occurred .suddenly on Saturday last of Mr. Frederick George Miller, a highly respected resident of Alexandra, at the age of 71 years. The late Mr. Miller was well-known in the Alexandra and Yea districts. He possessed a likeable nature, and was liked by all who knew him. The fune ral took place on Saturday morn ing last at the Alexandra ceme tery. ;Rev. McKenzie officiated, and Cumming, Culhane and Co. had charge of the funeral ar rangements. The coffin-bearers Messrs. E. Miller, A. Miller, N. Miller, M. Eaton, R. Morgan, B. Miller. Pall-bearers were Mes srs. A. Eaton, W; Whiting, W. Miller, R. Miller. SECTION X-SCHOOL WORK. The display in the above sec tion- was particularly good, and earned very favorable comment from persons who inspected it. Mr. Reg. Payne (President) and Mr. H. C. Clements (Secretary) and committee worked hard to wards staging the show. It is re gretted very much indeed that a fixture which pointed to being a great success, was spoilt to a big degree, by rain. " The newly-erected publican's booth is a, great improvement. It is situated in an ideal spot, and when completed (with earth fill ing placed around the base of the building) will be a facility that will be welcome by bodies who use the showgrounds. Darmody Bros. liad charge of the publican's booth at the show, whilst Mr. S. Howard had charge of the luncheon and afternoon stall, and the Hospital Auxiliary conducted the soft drink stall. Miss Mary McBean, of the Young Country Pary, was present, and formed a branch during the evening. Mr. Stan Mackerell, member of the central council of the party, intro duced Mr. Clive Nason. ORDINARY BUSINESS. Cr. Jones was informed by the en gineer that the embargo on log cart ing expired on September 30. Cr. Jones said that logs were being taken out at Terip after that date. He re ferred to- a hall being built at Terip, and did not know if a permit had been obtained or not. He would like the people in that locality to be given every assistance, and advice on cer tain matters pertaining to the erec tion of the building which was re quired by the health regulations, etc. He felt sure that if this were done it would be appreciated. Cr. Girdwood referred to gravel be ing taken from Eildon and used in other parts of the shire. The engin. ineer appeared a little surprised at this statemenf, but Cr. Girdwood said it was based on fairly reliable infor mation. However, the engineer is go ing to make enquiries, as he knew nothing about gravel being removed from Eildon. T:'eRIP TERIP The Tlrip Hall was filled to canacity on Friday night, 14th inst., when Cr. A. JIett, of Yea, brought a concert party frpnm that town to assist the T'rip branch of the C.W.A. with its annual effort. Duri:g the evening Cr. Bett com mented on the appreciativeness of the large audience, but this was not to be wondered at, as the talent of each ar. tist was of a high calibre, bringing great pleasure to all present. Community singing between: each item proved very popular, as was the short dance which finished olT the evening, to the strains of the Terip or. chestra, assisted by Mr. Goo. Brooks. bank and Mr. Jock Bourne. Before the conclusion of the concert Cr. A. K. Rowan thanked the visitors on behalf of the C.W.A. and all pres ent, for coming so far to assist the branch and for presenting such grand entertainment.
