THE LOCUSTS. (Continued from our Paper of Tuesday, December 3.) [Newspaper Article] — South Australian — 13 December 1844

THE LOCUSTS. BT NATUR JE A MATOO. (Continuêd from our Pmper of Tuesday, December 9.) >THE females are now (Nov. 27th) everywhere laying their eggs. They have for some days past begun to do so on the northern side of the river but now they may be observed in South Adelaide in afr the open parts. Towards the {evening they were especially assiduous, and seemed to prefer this time of the day. Perhaps they were more aware than we were that the next day would not be so favorable. Their habits when ovipositing are, perhaps, the most singular and interesting in the economy of these insects. In all the bare places near and around the town, and along every open road and footpath, numbers of holes might be ob- served, where the eggs had been already deposited. To see how this is accomplished we must cautiously approach one of these bare spots, where a com- pany of, perhaps, a dozen males or more, for they vary very much in number, are collected in a little group round a single female locust...

Mr Smith appeared for the complainant. Benjamin Wickham was examined.-I am the owner of sections 725 and 726, District C, ad- joining Mr Grote's ; the trees upon these sections are my property ; I live there three days a-week ; I have sheep there ; there are a great many wattle gums growing there ; I know the defendant ; I saw him and another man on these sections on Saturday the 30th Dec. ; they looked about a bit, and then began stripping off the bark; I think they did not see me-I concealed myself and watched them; Burgess was in the act of stripping; the dray came up shortly afterwards, with two lads; there appeared to be eight bullocks ; the dray was loaded ia my sight; Burgess assisted; when loaded, Burgess drove off ; at this time I saw the witness, Douglas, speaking to Bu.gess ; I followed the...
