Women not Admitted. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 23 May 1891

Women not Admitted. Tho Mosquo of St. Sophia is ono of tho most interesting buildings in Constanti nople, to visitors. It is in the form of a Creek crq^s. and Ijas a central dome 100ft. above the floor; it was doubtless once much higher, as the gilded cupola could bo seen 100 miles at sen, and was a land mark for' ships coming up the harbour. The inside is very beautiful, with its 60 columns of marblo ' and granite and porphery, some brought from Helippous, some fromBaalbac, some from Athens and othersfromthetempleoflKanaatEphesus. It was built 6317538 A.D., and is one of thp finest specimens of Byzantine architecture. But all the grandeur and all the beauty of this magnificent Mosque is for male eyes alone. The peculiar religion of tho Koran, as proclaimed by the priests, has set a rule of inhibition against tho Mohammedan women visiting the Mosque ; if pormittefl to enter on any especial occasion, they must sit in the galleries, with their fices closely veiled. This is tho intoler...
