BAKER'S LAND CASE. [Newspaper Article] — Jerilderie Herald and Urana Advertiser — 8 April 1898

BAKER'S LAND., CASE, Tiib result of- tlio. decision, in. Mir. Baker's- land case at Urana last Satur day, coming after the opinion of the Chairman of the Land Board when the same case came on for its hearing at Jeriiderie in July last, was rather one of surprise. At the Board's, sitting in, denlderio the chairman decided postr poning this very case pending tho Full Court's decisioa in the Nelson v. Lumby's appeal. As our readers are aware this has been before tho Full Court, and decided by them that the conditional purchaser nover had any right given him to apply for the land in dispute as an additional conditional purchase and a conditional lease, simply because the aforesaid land had never been open to conditional purchase at any time. That being the opinion of the highest tribunal in the land, the appli cation of Baker's, which was supposed to be pending this decision was looked upon as practically decided, hence, when the news came that the Board had allowed his application to h...

PORT OF WEI-HAI-WEI. [Newspaper Article] — Jerilderie Herald and Urana Advertiser — 8 April 1898

PORT OF WEI-HAI-WEI. The Times of. yesterday published a, statement that China had agreed to lease Wci-lmi-wei to Great Britain after Japan has withdrawn from that port in May. i no statement lias now been con firmed, and it is announced that Japan lias agreed to the grant of the lease. London, April 5. A general impression exists that .Great Britain will exact further conces sions from China than the lease of Wei-hai-wei by way of compensation for the concessions to Russia and other powers. In England tho press and politicians generally are satisfied with tho action of the Government in taking possession of Wei-hai-wci, but the army and navy, show less satisfaction, fearing that tho maintenance of a heavy garrison and the construction of extensivo fortifications will be necessary. Germany is completely surprised at the nows of the lenso of tho port to Britain, but is apparently acquicscei\t,.

THE CRISIS IN CHINA. SENSATIONAL ASSERTIONS; London, April 4. - A singular report lias been received from Tientsin.
