NUTS. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 24 February 1900

NUTS. — o — The fatheaded committee of the Newcastle 8chool of Arts has scored. The ' Bulletin ' has backed its cart over the war business. Soon as it heard of the Newcastle decision, the red-covered rag determined that it would be better to ' scab ' than to suffer pecuniary loss, and straight way the editor clothed him self in sackcloth and ashes, repented him of his former bad works, and lustily shouted : ' The Empire — right or wrong !'* The People learns with regret of the serious of | Mr. John Mulvena of Casino, who, according to ?' R.R. Herald,'is in a very critical condition. a ty phoid relapse is the cause of the trouble. — o — The daily press says Herbert Croft has ''re signed ' his position. So J, W. Bailey and The People have scored this case. By why should Herbert Croft have to ' resign,' while Croft, sen., the really guilty party, remains. — 0 — For inconsistency the members of the so-called Queensland Labor Party take the whole ' Biscuit Factory.' The Brisbane 'Courier...

No title [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 24 February 1900

Thus a correspondent : ' Speaking at a meeting at Tumut on Saturday night, Mr. Fegan (Minister for Mines) asked the people to put reliance in him, and he would do his utmost for the mining industry. Very good, Fegan. Will you give us something to' justify thar confidence ? Will you f«ra start appoint a com mission to investigate the following points in the Glebe case : 1. Was Bailey dismissed tr-r finding and reporting gas ? 2. Did Chief Inspector Atkinson and his assistants do their du'y in urging Bailey to square with Keightly, 3# Has Bailey's sacrifice ac complished what Inspectors and Labor members failed to d~ with regard to improv ing the ventilation ? 4. Is it legal to boycott Bailey for rending a service to the mining community ? hould Fegan shirk the above, then we must rank him amongst dodgers, like the late lamented Joe Cook. Perhaps, though, the com mission which Mr. Bower mentioned at Minmi is to deai with the above subject. Certainly Edden is the man who ought to see t...

OPEN COLUMN. The A.S.L. Platform. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 24 February 1900

OPEN COLUMN. The A.S.L. Platform. TO THE EDITOR. Comrade, — In last issue Com rade Eyre deals it out pretty strongly to Mr. Waldon re his lecture on ' Wealth and Capital ' given at Headquarters, and with his arguments. I, and all mem bers of our movement, must agree, though it is to the concluding paragraph of his letter I wish to reply, wherein he says : ' I think very little good is done by allow1 ing the platform of the Australian Socialist League to be used for the purpose of such definitions as Mr. Waldon is reported to have given of ' Wealth and Capital.' .... The minds of Social ists should be used to cultivate the true seed not for the sowing of tares and wild oats such as the pseudo - scientific economics of Henry George are composed of.' All of which is admirable and should be carried out to the letter, if — there are scientific,, rigid, capable Socialists to do it. | Let as face the facts, comrade. The executive of the Central Branch has the responsibility thrown upon its...

DEMANDS OF TBE AUSTRALIAN S0CIALI8T LEAGUE (Adopted Easter, 1898.) ' Workers of all Countries, Unite.'— MARX. THE Capitalist fo»m of Society in which we at present exiat, and which the Capitalist* uphold, is based upon class supremacy, maintained by cla^s government through th« n-ivate o-vne*ahi-- of the means of production, distribution, and exchange. I This eronorr ic power, tins poseespion by the landlord and capitalist class of the wholeof the forces of wealth-1 reduction, puts the wo-king class in complete subjection to the said dominant clasp, thoa depriving the great mass of the people of the full product of their labor. As the present system i» thus based uponclais antagonism and injustice, and as the capitalist class will only permit the wage-ea-ning class to produce wealth in the f -rm of commodities for sale, paving to them ax wa es bat one-third of the wealth so produced, and taking for themselves the other two-thirds as profits, the aforesaid mode of pro duction for pro...

OPEN COLUMN. "In His Steps." [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 24 February 1900

OPEN COLUMN. 'In His Steps.' What Jeans will say : 'Non- obedience to my laws ' — ' Love your enemies,' ' Resist not Evil,' by leaders of public opinion, and keepers of the national conscience, preachers, authors, and editors of capitalistic papers, and politicians — has been continued for so many generations that the in evitable natural product is a mo dern ruling class whose religion is rooted in a depraved notion of God, whose souls are not yet born to God's purpose of Univer sal Brotherhood ; the idea of hu man brotherhood has not yet existed in their brain ; their consciencesare notyet alive to the truth that war is wholesale mur der and every soldier a legalised Cain ; that it is quite as logical,, quite as reasonable', to speak of a Christian murderer as a Christian soldier. Our leaders, like Nico demus, will need to be born again before they can see the hollow mockery of our religion in modern Churchianity.' — R.P.

SYDNEY PRINTERS. What Has the Line Taught Them? [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 24 February 1900

SYDNEY PRINTERS. I What Has the L,f no Taught Them? Nothing, if one were to judge of the effect it has had on their union. It is now some five or six years Bince the linotype made its appearance in Sydney, and reduced the number of employees in the composing rooms of the daily newspapers by some 60 per cent. Since then. besides the capitals of the different provinces, it has made its ap pearance in some of the smaller towns. So far as The People is aware, in N.SrW., outside of Sydney, the Newcastle Herald is the only one which has reduced its cost of production by the lino. Last weekt however, there ap peared an advertisement in the 8.W. Herald :— T INOTYPE Operator Wanted for I 1 the Country. Bex, G.P.O., 8yd neye This probably means Bathurst or Goulburn, but it is only a matter of ' time when every country newspaper of any size will possess at least one machine. Bat before that time-comes, some thing of more immediate conse quence will occur in Sydney itself. This will be the inst...
