NEWS OF YOUR FRIENDS. A Weekly Budget to the Boys. [Newspaper Article] — The Leader — 14 February 1919

NEWS OF YOUR FRIENDS. A Weekly Budget to the Boys. Dear Comrades, — 'The cry is still thev come,' but in a very different sense from the onset of an enemy in battle, for it is of the Boys home-coming the ipeople of Australia are thinking. Things seem to be well ar ranged at the other end, in regard to transport, but to say that the influenza .scare has gone to the heads of the Fed eral authorities is to put it mildly. In 'vespy truth, 'some one has blundered.'' Long ere you read these lines you wiir have learnt all about the pneumonioin fluenza scare and how Queensland- fared. All that we know, the present and the. past, is that a troopship was ordered up to Lytton. Now I put it to yam, 'Which lis the. plan .more calculated to keep in ing of a ship in Moreton Bay, or the sending of her up to Lytton, within a few miles of Brisbane?' There is the question and I guess a man does not require to be a Statesman or even a politician to reply at once. Of -course, horse sense gives a verdict...

The League of Nations. [Newspaper Article] — The Leader — 14 February 1919

;? The League of Nations. The provisions for the League of Na tions seem satisfactory, and it is to be ??? '' hoped that steps will at once be taken to constitute the supernational power. ? In its relation to keeping the peace, ; that which has been in the air for the past-twenty5 years and more, has crystal lised.!'('In the1 -case of a dispute between the mgnibers of the League diplomacy is to be tried, with resort to arbitration where agreement is not arrived at: Should that course also be ineffectual* then the supernational power will com pel obedience by the sword. Nothing iould be more satisfactory, but the satisfaction will not be complete until there is capability behind and with in the League to enforce its commands. : Does that power exist? Not as yet, for both France and Italy have declared that their position and facts connected with nations whose bounds march with' them point to conscription as necessary. The advance of this argument has a tendency to make one wonder if ...

ORDERS AND DIS-ORDERS. [Newspaper Article] — The Leader — 14 February 1919

ORDERS AND DIS-ORDERS. The O.B.E. is an order grand For those who serve their native land, When foes beset it on every side, They help the men who stem the tide. The O.B.U. is a different thing, And the 'Red Flag' song is the one they sing; ' 1 I And while patriots seek to win a war, . / They strive to get for themselves the more. , 1 One works for the Empire, the other for self, The first for honour, the second for pelf; One helps his land in its hour of need— 'Twill be destroyed by the other's greed. The A.I.F. and the R.S.A., Who bore the brunt of the Kaiser's 1 'Day,' Of letters of honour got not a few But in danger's zone found no O.B.U.'' To maintain a pledge that was swept aside, The A.I.F. fought andi unyielding, died, While behind their backs, at home, there ' ' grew -i :. ' 'Repudiation'; by the O.B.U.! Then highest hbnour 'to :the O.B.E. And the A.I.F. who kept us free; V But we all must grieve as we sadly view The Bolshevik trend of the O.B.U. ' ROSECOWEN.- ' Brisbane, 1...

Local Efforting. [Newspaper Article] — The Leader — 14 February 1919

Local Efforting, Proverbial wisdom tells us that if we look aftei^vthe pence, the pounds look after themselves. It is just that way in regard to organisations. If the branches are energetic and have as their office-bearers and members those who are devoted to the common cause then the object cannot fail of its pur pose the united efforting inu.t be suc cessful. The Labour Movement owes 'its suc cess in very great measure to the at tention which is paid to this important point, and as it is non-party, so it ipust be with the non-party Federation work ing in the sphere of politics. ? Wherever in any district or commun ity a group of returned soldiers is to be found there should be activity. The branches are as necessary to the stem as the stem to the branches. Beyond that wherever there are those interested in the soldiers, wherever there are parents, wives, brothers, sis ters and friends of the men who have gone on' war service, just there should there' a' nucleus of influence on beh...

Farms for our Soldiers. AN AMERICAN SUGGESTION. The following is an extract from an article in Munsey's Magazine, written by Senator Charles Curtis, as a suggestion for settling returning soldiers in America. It r' 'will be of interest to our readers as our own statesmen are now searching for a successful system of land settle ment for soldiers with which to help solve the repatriation problem: — ,/\At the end of this great war a vast /industrial crisis may arise.
