SECRETARY'S EMBEZZLEMENT. FUGITIVE HILLYAR. RIP VAN WINKLE BOARD. [Newspaper Article] — Sunday Times — 4 May 1902

SECRETARY'S   EMBEZZLEMENT. FUGITIVE HILLYAR. RIP VAN WINKLE BOARD. It is many weeks since we drew atten-   tion in a sub-leader to the extraordinary   curse of the West, which allows everything to drift, and encourages and compounds dis-   honor and dishonesty. We then drew attten- tion to the marvellous supineness of the Preston Roads Board, which for three solid years allowed its secretary to mix and mud- dle the acccounts of the board until they had passed into hopeless chaos beyond the skill of the most accomplished auditors to reduce to order. But Preston is a comparatively insignificant place, and so far removed from the supposed civilization of the metropolis     that people treated it as a matter of perfect indifference as to how the secretary of its       Roads Board acted. It is, therefore, neces- sary to come nearer home, and we need go no further away tha...

LUDICROUS LIES. MEXICAN MORGANS' MENDACITY. [Newspaper Article] — Sunday Times — 4 May 1902

LUDICROUS LIES. MEXICAN MORGAN'S MENDACITY. Our contemporary, the Spectator, takes a   clipping from the Adelaide Critic, which states:—"In connection with the Herald is   the Daily News, a woeful production, which might much more fittingly be entitled the 'Daily Nonews.' This sheet is the outcome of the Inquirer, the first paper published in the State—it is very old, very feeble. Car- ries no weight, influences nothing, affects   nobody. Therefore Morgans has no use for it. He has no use for anything or anyone,   he has no use for. The News is to be disposed of. And I hear the proprietary of the SUNDAY TIMES is in treaty for it. But the last-named paper and its sister sheet, the Kalgoorlie Sun, are both influential anti-Morganites, and the condition on which   the News—a losing venture at present—goes over to their ownership is that the three papers become powerfully pro-Morgans." For all this fabrication there is no ...
