What the Melbourne Papers Say. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 11 September 1903

What the Melbourne Papers Say. The ' Herald.' — ' One of the principal attractions in the court, and the most novel, is the extensive exhibit of the Queensland Agricul tural Department, which occupies fully three- fourths of the building: There is an amazing variety of pro ducts shown in this exhibit, ranging from ham, bacon, and cheese, to tropical fruits, tapioca, tea, gourds, sugar, and coed and other minerals, though these latter appertain more to the Mining than to the Agricul tural Department. Evidently, hov,T ever, the Queensland Agsicultural Department is not conservative in its methods, and, wisely, does not hesitate to enter upon the domain of other departments in order to make a complete exhibition of the resources of the sugar State. As it stands now revealed to the visitors, the exhibit is one of absorbing in terest, and should be seen by all.' The 'Argus' — 'The pride of place has been given to Queens land, and most worthily has Mr. Mahon and his assistants acknow ledg...

OUR STORY COLUMN. The Little Mountain Maid. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 11 September 1903

OUR STOEI COLIJJffl. The Little Mountain Maid. BY JAMES $ILK!NSON. - ? - * - ' One half the'j world does not know how the other halt lives,' is a rather hackneyecVsaying, but it is none the less true. 1 And one does not require to travel many miles from his owx dooh even here in . Queensland, to prove its truth. During the last three years pur thoughts and speecih have been full of the deeds of danjig and heroism performed by our IColonial. troops on the battlefields -}f South Africa. To thdsp; who kneWthe metal -of ' our boys,' there was nothing sur prising in their upholding the best traditions of the rac.es from which the}- sprang. Th^y have been ' brave as Britons,'* brave as Irish men, and that is saying- all that need be said. All honour to them and to the land that, sent them forth. But while the glartiour and glory of such deeds; loora large wherever Tve look, we shoulci not let them blind us to the facti that there is heroism other than 'jthat displayed in storming ;i kopje...

Queensland at the, Molboaroe Show, By a Visitor. (Specially Writti{n' i»or the ' CHROXICLk.') - One of the wisest things the Queensland Government has done for some time past was to send an exhibit 03 the State products to the j Melbourne Show. I visited tie show on the 2nd instant, fn company with an old fneftd, an ex Queenslander, ard together we made a bee-liue for the Queensland section. It. was located amongst tli e Victorian district exhibits— jColac, Mil dura, Goulbourn, &c. ; and comparing it with them I felt that there was no need to feel ashamed of the display made by our sunny Statk Even the cabbages, which j had been brought over i,2od- miles, ex cited surprise in tlae ' cabbage garden' of Australia. What a variety of produc ts ! and how fine of their class! were amongst the remarks one fre quently heard f-'oni deeply interested, spectators. Wool, cotton, sugar in ajl its forms aud stages, coffee, j grain, fod der 'of many varieties, fruits, timber of over ja hun...
