BOXING. STORY OF SAM M'VEA. Will Bring Home the Bear. [Newspaper Article] — Forbes Advocate — 22 December 1911

STORY OF SAM M'VEA. Will Bring Home the Bear. Billy M'Claln, Sam M'Vea's manager, recalls an incident in Sam's days with his father on the old plantation. It happened about ten years ago, in a little town called Baker's Field, California. Sam was called. Phill by his father. Things had not been too good, and as there were no fowls lurking in the vicinity, because the hawkers had bought them all up, Sam's father came to the conclusion it was going to be a dull Christmas, unless he got a move on. So he made up his mind to go on a bear hunt. Phill pleaded to be allowed to go, as he was afraid the bears might bite his dad, but the elder M'Vea shook his head, and said, "No." Phill knew what no meant, and stood with his hands on his hips in-that characteristic defying Peter Jackson style. "There never was nothing that ever wore hair that your dad .was afraid of," said M'Vea, senr., who started off on his one-man hunt. "Well, the experience he had I do not know," Mr M'Clain went on; "but u...

THE FUNERAL SERMON. [Newspaper Article] — Forbes Advocate — 22 December 1911

THE FUNERAL SERMON. The following is the text of the sermon delivered at. the requiem mass on Tuesday, in St Lawrence's, liy the Right Rev. Di\ Dunne.-. Bishop of Bathurst:—\x=req-\ We are assembled Here to-day to honor. the memory of the late Dean M'Auliffe, to render his soul spiritual assistance, and to show; our sympathy with liis living behoved friends and * relations. .On such sad occasions it is becoming . that somebody should make a brief reference to his life labors and many virtues, and in the absence of others more closely connected with the dear deceased, such an allusion becomes my duty. , The Scripture reminds us that we should not offer much praise to the living, lest flattery should be tlie motive, and vanity the , consequence, but when these dangers are removed by death, the edification of the faithful may be best consulted by placing before them a few facts in connection with their late spiritual guide and leader. Your late-pastor, dear people, was born in the sout...
