TOWNSVILLE, June 17. Mr J. N. Parkes, President of the Separation league, has received a telegram from the Private Secretary to the Governor, stating that the letter enclosing the resolu- tion passed at a meeting attended by dele- gates to the Conference of Northern Local Authorities, to the effect that nothing short of Territorial Separation would satisfy the North, would be forwarded to the Secretary of State by the outgoing mail. Mr Mathieson, the senior Railway Com-     missioner, received a deputation from the   Chamber of Commerce this morning at the Queen's Hotel. During the course of an interview, he said, that shortly there would be two trains per day from Hughenden. He was unfavorable to the establishment of a travelling post office on the Northern Railway, but said that lavatory carriages were now being tested on the southern Rail- ways, and if the expectations of the Commis- ioners were realised, the same sort of carriages would be ...

LATE CABLES. ? ? : ME DIBBS. London, Jane 27. Mr Dibbs goes to Sheffield on Monday to inspect the factories, and ' will interview Mr Groschen on Wed nesday when he will Bee Lord Knuts ford. He will then have a conversa tion with them on the Consolidation Scheme. Mr Dibbs, backed by the Rothschilds' assurance that the pro posal is a practical one, is sanguine he can frame a proposal to convert New South Wales Loans into consols of one denomination and rate of interest so as to overcome MrGoschen's objection, also to induce him to countenance the investment of home trust money in Colonial debentures. MR GLADSTONE INJURED. LONDON, June 26, When Mr Gladstone was speaking at Chester a woman threw a piece of bread, wounding him in the eye, caus ing an abrasion, which bled freely. He is now confined to the house ; the eye is not so well and inflammation is feared. LONDON, June 27. Mr Gladstone declares that he never saw a woman throw with such spiteful energy. The Press unitedly deplore the ontrage. Various reasons hare been assigned for the woman's action, some saying that she threw "for luck," The police hope to effect her arrest.

LATE TELEGRAMS. (FEOM ovb cobbesfoxtdebx.) (BY TELEGRAPH.) TowffsrrLra:, June 27. OPERATIONS were commenced to-day at the Queensland Meat Export Company's Works; everything went very satisfactorily. Thirty head of the Hon, W. Aplin'e Southwick cattle were killed and frozen thiB afternoon. The first steamer to take in a. cargo of meat is expected here on the 25th of next montli. BOWEN, Jane 27. The Poet Office at Normanby was Broken into on Saturday night, and £1 worth of postage stamps and £3 cash, and the contents of three packages and some letters were extracted. The big iron safe could not be opened by the thieves, although the lock was broken.

The Late Lord Hamp den. The above is a portrait of Viscount Hjamp >den who died at Brighton in May last, at the -age of 78. His Lordship was better known as the*Hon. Mr. Brand, Speaker of the House of Commons during (the 12 years following .1872, including the stormy period of the Irish Legislation of 1881. Lord Hampden, ^claimed descent from John of that name who so gallantly opposed Charles L Ship Money Scheme. From the point of view of Parlia mentary procedure, Lord Hampden's Speaker ship is memorable for one thing-viz, his famous coup d'etat of Feb. 2, 1881. The struggle over the Coercion Act had been going on fordays, and the Speaker having (as 4ie felt) no sufficient powers to stop obstruc tion, proceeded to invest ^himself with new ones.
