TO CORRESPONDENTS. [Newspaper Article] — The Hobart Town Courier and Van Diemen’s Land Gazette — 1 November 1839

TO CORRESPONDENTS. \ We have received Port Phillip papers to the 24<7i of October, but they contain little matter of public inte- rest. A new lighthouse has been commenced at Getli. brand's Point. The papers are both busy in main ?taining that it would be beneath the dignity of mighty melbourne to allow their Governor to live on any less salary than £2000 a-year. We have no doubt Mr. Latrobe trill not feel indtspovtd to admit the justice of the proposition. To judge from the tone of these papers, tee must suppose the people of Port Phillip were going mad.-We have also Indian papers, but they bring no more recent intelligence from the seat of war than the fall of Canduhar. D. must furnish us with his name before we can publish his letter. X.X. has mistaken his forte. His jocularity is of the " gentle dulness" class. His M.S. lies in the office. We must defer, for want of room, ournotice of the Both, well Mechanics' Institution till next week. It it in type.

The Courier. FRIDAY EVENING, NOVEMBER 1, 1339. [Newspaper Article] — The Hobart Town Courier and Van Diemen’s Land Gazette — 1 November 1839

%&%$ &ÚU?Í$V* FRIDAY*EVENING. Novxmber 1,1339. In another pnrt of our paper will te found a letter from the Colonial Treasurer, in reference to a puff in last week's 'Tiser, announcing the Secretary of State's approval of Sir John Franklin's nomination of Mr. Forster to hold the office of Colonial Secretary during the ab- sence of Captain Montagu. Who is Mr. Forster ? There is an affectation of civilianism in this that suits not with Captain Forster, however aptly it may seem to the scribe who wrote it to accord with the title of Colonial Secretary. There is an ill-dressed look of mufti about it-a Quaker-like assumption of sim 5ilicity-a pride that apes humility and tramples ike the cynic upon the uniform of Captain, only with greater pride to assume the garb and the appellation of what cockneys and bagmen would call a gent. We perceive that it is Captain Forster who is meant, and we congratulate him upon the result. We never thought it likely to be a subject worthy ...

BOTHWELL. [Newspaper Article] — The Hobart Town Courier and Van Diemen’s Land Gazette — 8 November 1839

BOTHWELL. We have the pleasure to find that the lectures con- nected with the Literary Society at this place have been io progress since our last notice, and it must be highly gratifying to the gentlemen who have so kindly volunteered their services for the purpose, that the interest in the lectures appears to have increased, if we may judge from the crowded stale of the lecture room, and the distance many of the members travel ia order to be present. On the 201k Sept., E. S. Hall, Esq., the District Surgeon, delivered his second lecture on the " Struc ture and Functions of the Human Body," ia which he gave a general description of the muscles, tendons, &c, their various attachments, forms, power, and sizes. In illustrating the force of the muscles, the lecturer instanced the circumstance of four horses having failed in tearing asunder while alive, the limbs of Damuns, who was sentenced to undergo that horrid punishment, for his attempt to assassinate Louis XV. ; their great...
