GARDENING NOTES [Newspaper Article] — The Leader — 31 October 1946

GARDENING NOTES By Evergreen Thc present is a good time to sow seeds of those unique flowers known as SaJpiglossis. Each plant, if given atten- tion will produce a large number of ?blooms, of striking color and of dainty »shape. The tanings are varied, ranging from pale yellow to velvety red. It is adviseable before planting to dress the ground with a fungicide as these plants are somewhat susceptable to wilt. During the Summer however, they are very hardy and stand up to mast con- ditions. T,he Hydrangeas are now fairly in their stride and stem lengths arc increasing dairy. Some have very full heads of buds while others continue to grow and will later form into bud as the reason develops. Watering must not on nny account be neglected at this stage as this is detrimental to full formation of the beautiful flowers every gardener de- sires. Wilting through want of water j does a lot of harm to the plants and every care should be taken to see that such a condition is avoided. Where gro...

TRIBUTE TO JIMMY DUNCAN [Newspaper Article] — The Leader — 31 October 1946

TRIBUTE TO JIMMY DUNCAN A gloom came over Randwick. I will never forget that day. When Lachie Melville told the crowd Jimmy Duncan had passed away. He was on the favourite. Lord Dundee, In that first and fateful race. And as he left the enclosure There was a smile upon his face. He was loved by folks both young and old Too numerous to count. Who always had their five bob tote, On Jimmy Duncan's mount. 'Twas at the half mile that Jimmy fell, In Uiat crowded novice race. And when they reached him on the track Tile smile had left his face. He won the Doncaster Handicap, That famous Randwick mile. A victor}' on Blue Legend In that typical Duncan style. Another win on Craigie Was in a Sydney Cup. It was Duncan's clever riding That got the black horse up. When jockeys in a distance race Obey the starter's call, They will think of Jimmy Duncan, The champion of them all. And when we're on the race-track, And we see a Handicap run; We'll think of that great horseman, Australia's famous son. ...
