THE NATIVE POLICE FORCE. [Newspaper Article] — Rockhampton Bulletin and Central Queensland Advertiser — 7 September 1861

THE NATIVE POLICE FORCE. THE following is a copy of letter ad-     dressed by Mr. Frederick Walker to the Attorney-General, containing charges of   a very serious nature against certain pub- lic officers; in reply to which he has re-     ceived a letter simply acknowledging its   receipt by the Colonial Secretary! The   letter is dated Nullabin Post office, 10th July, 1861:   SIR,- I was much pleased to see in a report of a speech made by you in the Legislative Assembly, that you stated it was the duty of magistrates to protect the aborigines quite as much so as it was their duty to protect the Europeans. This from the Attorney General of the colony is a valuable admission, but I would ask you of what use are such truisms, when it is notorious that they are ignored in practice?   At the Juandah massacre, the blacks who had been proven to the satisfaction of five magis...

To the Editor of the Bulletin. [Newspaper Article] — Rockhampton Bulletin and Central Queensland Advertiser — 28 September 1861

To the Editor of the Bulletin. Sir, --- Some few weeks ago, I wrote you a hurried letter in pencil, relative to the urgency of the Government taking immediate steps for placing a punt   and boat on the Lower Dawson, in the neighbourhood of Rio at Roxborough. I now beg leave again to call your attention   to this matter. I am not far wrong when I assure you that it is a matter of life     and death to the stock proprietors of a large country, rapidly being filled with stock of every description. It is lament-         able to listen to the complaints at the   various stations on this route. From the   first to the last there is but one cry : "Out of supplies ! The Dawson is up !" Surely the Government will not defer to   apply the remedy. Were the punt and     boat there, and the approaches made, the whole affair might...

Maryborogh, July 29,1861.   SIR,--- We do ourselves the honor to bring under your notice, the grievous   injury and injustice done to Mr. Jos.       Sherwin, who has been suspended and dismissed from his office as Clerk of Works without being called upon to   substantiate the truthfulness or otherwise   of his allegations against his superior officer.   lt is our opinion that the charges are of so serious a nature that in common justice to the parties concerned, including the public at large, an inquiry ought to   be made to ascertain whether such charges     are correct. We to the best of our knowledge willingly bear testimony to       the efficient manner in which Mr. Sher- win has carried out his [?] in [?]           place, and beg to st...
