BUILDERS' LABORERS. The President of the Building Trades' Federa tion, in- referring to the Federal' award relating to builders'' laborers, expressed his belief that master builders. _woujd adhere to the provisions of the award. In regard' to the -^hours' Avorking 'week, Mr. Justice Liiggins had, Mr. Millard said, granted a !?'» weeks' stay of proceedings, but the men would ex pect that all time worked m excess of eight hours per day and four hours on Saturday would be paid- for at overtime rates. . ? 'No man should, in my opinion,' added Mr. M'il lard, 'go home with less than £3 per week for a trade or calling which involves a loss of 30 per cent, in wages by reason of wet weather and other broken time. When all things were worked out .the average would not be more than £2/8/-.

ELECTRIFICATION OF MELBOURNE TRAWWAYS. . ? The long-delayed electrification of Melbourne Tramways is at last in sight, by an action on the part of the Kew Council to have their horse-car service altered. For years a discontented people has suffered an antiquated and altogether inade quate street cable-car service. Frequent incursions of councils, and bands of in terested members of the community have been as frequently turned down. This, no doubt, is owing to thc fact that the Melbourne Tramway and Omni bus Company has only a lease of the streets and roads made use of, which lease is drawing to expira tion. In the outer suburbs an even worse system than cable cars is in vogue, a horse-car being the only means of transit. Kew is one of these badly served communities, and the district's rapid expan sion is evidently the cause of the council's deter mination to persevere until the irregular and almost walking-pace service was altered.
