(ur Letter Box. MULGRAVE SHIRE AFFAIRS. To TnHE EDITOR. Sir, -J. Law says a letter ap pears over my name; I wonder how many helped J. Law to comn pose his letter. J. Law affirms that Mr Nelson put drags and horses on the road at a cost of .500; no doubt the drags and hor es are very nice, but I fail to see £50o in them; but then p; rhaps being a councillor I am a bit dull: perhaps wiser men like J. Law; could see 6700 or £800 in them. Again, he asserts that too late I tly to the opposite extreme. Why too late? I think anyone will admit that I get a fair share of patronage on the road, for which I thank the public, and as to to the statement that I boasted that I would run er Nelson off the road, to that I giva the lie direct, as the road is as free to Mr Nelson or any other man as it is to me, and the public can ride with whom they please, I cannot understand why J. Law takes such an interest in MIr Nel son's affairs, and as to J. Law's; remarks about my horses and coach, I don't th...

Hendricks is unable to play this afternoon ; but, will don the purple and gold next Saturday. One or two of the previous year's "leather hunters" are unable to play for obvious reasons. Are they contemplating marriage ? Scott is improving. He has got rid of the "old women's" kick -to the joy of the coach. Stewart is the making of finue footballer, should he master one fault, viz:- Directly on getting the ball his habit is to rush the ball out of bounds or kick it over fence-This counts 6 in cricket not in football. The trainer and coach will no doubt deliver his initial speech this afternoon. The players should be only too willing to learn. Cox is getti...

Mulgrave Shire Council. Following is the remainder of the business.transacted at the council meeting held on 16th uinst: - THu SHIRE HALL. QUESTION. The Secretary read the resolu tion carried at a recent meeting held in the Mechanics' Hall, Glen Waverley, urging that it would be in the best interests of the Shire if the Council offices were removed from Oakleigh to a central position in the Shire. Cr Jordan, in moving the resolu tion, said: The meeting at which this resolution was carried was the largest and most representative I have ever seen in the Shire, and it was unanimously of opinion that the time had arrived for Mulgrave to have the Shire offices in its own territory. I am completely in ac cord with it. I may say that I am not wedded to any particular site; that is a matter for after considera tion. At present we are solely concerned in dealing with the question of removal. Recently an additional officer has been ap pointed, and he has to come out of the Shire to Oakleigh. ...

The Oakleigh Carnival. [Newspaper Article] — Oakleigh and Caulfield Times Mulgrave and Ferntree Gully Guardian — 25 April 1914

The Oakleigh Carnival. The arrangements for holding the above are as complete as human ingenuity can devise. There is only one thing the committee can not control, via , the weather ; we are bound to have some of some sort whether or no, and we hope it will be fine. It is the last holiday for a considerable time, the King's Birthday and Empire Day being only partially observed, and :narv will seek outdoor enjoyment. - The residents are asked to unite and co-operate with the conmnittee in making this gathering the most successful of any yet held. In doing so they will not only ensure a day of thorough enjoyment for themselves and their families but provide a splendid advertisement for the district. There is need to cultivate the civic spirit and take a pride in making Oakleigh the best and most attractive suburb in the metropolitan area. Our population is constantly receivin, accessions, and the newcomers are as vwercome as the older residents to join in the celebration of Carnival D...
