Young. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 28 April 1896

Young. (from our own correspondent.) The country in places is fairly well coated with grass, but where it has been at all stacked up it is terribly bare, that is, in the majority of places. Water is fairly plentiful in most cases, but a number of runs have little or none. There are now indica tions of rain, which would be most welcome, as, if it did not start the grass growing, it would fill tanks and dams, and also enable the plough to get down. Stock generally is not showing marked signs of distress, but owners are looking anxiously for a break in the weather. Obituary. — In the death, on the 15th inst., of Mr. Walter Ruther ford, of Milong Station, the district suffers a severe loss. A pure specimen of the thoroughbred Scotchman, a man of spotless integrity, a shrewd judge of stock, his place cannot be filled ; and, although he was 79 years of age and the end was foreseen, still a sadness lingers in the heart of every true man who knew him. ' He was a man, take him for all in all...

CATTLE [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 28 April 1896

CATTLE 2019 Cattle yarded, the bulk of which were Queenslanders, which came in fresh and well, as also did a couple of lots of Northern district cattle, travelled down by road. The supply included some very heavy drafts of bullocks, and a much larger proportion of cows than usual, with a fair sprinkling of steers, heifers, and calves ; but the number forward was greatly in excess of requirements, and prices, consequently, were lower throughout, although the Sydney Meat Preserving Company materially assisted sales by relieving the market of upwards of 300 head. Ticks on Grasshoppers. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 28 April 1896

Ticks on Grasshoppers. Mrs. E. A. McPherson, writing to Dr. Hunt, from Olutha, North Queens land (reports the ' Hughenden Ob server'), relates a strange discovery made by her son Ossian — namely, the discovery of ticks on grasshoppers. I It appears that, having no fresh meat on which to regale a youthful laughing iackass. Mrs. McPherson 's children made a raid on grasshoppers to satisfy the cravings of poor Jacky. Asked by Ossian if she believed ticks lived on grasshoppers. Mrs. McPherson said she did not. The boy then lifted the shell between the wings of a large grass hopper he had in his hand and showed his mother several small red ticks, and stretching out the grasshopper's wings showed more beneath them. Mrs. McPherson took one of the ticks off, and putting it on a piece of iron saw that it was full of pale red blood. Mrs. McPherson says that when in Burketown some of her horses were badly infested with ticks, but are rid of them now, and that the grass hoppers were very thick ...

Travelling Stock. AN IMPORTANT CASE. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 28 April 1896

Travelling Stock. AN' IMPORTANT CASE. A Mudgee paper gives the following account of a case that was heard at the local Court of Petty Sossions on March 21st, in which a point was de cided regarding travelling stock : — ' Mr. Miller, the manager of Murrungundy ran, for whom M»\ Davidson appeared, summoned a drover named Sterling, who was travelling with a mob of sheep, via Wellington and Cobbora, for not travelling the direct route through Murrungundy run. The route he travelled was through the run from a place called ' The Rocks ' to Gillis's Place, and thence along the Dubbo road to Oobbora, the direct route being from The Rocks by a pro claimed clear road through a portion of Murrungundy run to the back of Elong Elong run, and Bell Bros.' run, to the Dubbo - Cobbora road. Travelling by the proclaimed road would save over six miles in distance, and cut off a long angle. Sterling did not appear, but stated to prosecutor that he was sorry for having travelled the wrong road. Defendan...

Simper's Silt Scoop. THE LATEST INVENTION. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Stock and Station Journal — 28 April 1896

Simper's Silt Scoop. THE LATEST INVENTION. Charles Simper, of Paradise Plains, near Hay, has come out in a new character. He is the inventor of a cheap, simple, effective tank scoop. We've seen a model of the scoop, and it is so simple and effective that you wonder why nobody ever thought of the plan before. The need of many parts of the flooded, sun-scorched, water soaked, wind-swept country of ours is deep tanks. The only way to meet that want is by means of simple scoops that won't get out of order. Charles Simper, of Paradise Plains (there's music in the name and title ; do you notice it V) has risen to meet the want. We'd describe the scoops, but it's not easy. We'll try and get a picture from Chas. Simper, of Para dise Plains, and then you'll be able to see for yourselves. Here's the des cription all right enough : — ' The scoop consists of two side walls and a sloping back, to the underside of which are secured circular-ended skids, like the runners of a sledge. The front of ...
