BENJAMIN BOYD. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 8 November 1905

BENJAMIN BOYD An interesting discussion in regard to the late Mr. Benjamin Boyd took place recently in the Mel bourne newspapers, to which Mr, J. M. Sinclair, of that city, con tributes the following: — 'During the forties, Benjamin Boyd must have been perhaps the most enter prising man in Australia. The Wanderer, a pleasure yacht of 180 tons, brought out from London by Boyd in the beginning of 1842, mounted brass guns, which had been recovered from the Royal George. During her time she was the finest yacht in Australian waters. From my unclw, Mr. James Mc Innis, who died in 1891, I learned a great deal about Boyd. He was stated to have brought out with him, on the Wanderer, nearly a quarter of a million sterling, which was made use of in his Australian enterprises. He also brought with him on the yacht a young man, who, in after years, became famous in the art world. Shortly before leaving London, Boyd, in passing along one of the streets — Fen- church Street or in that neighbor ho...

COBARGO ATHLETIC SPORTS [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 11 November 1905

COBARGO ATHLETIC SPORTS The athletic sports promoted by Messrs. J. W. Twyford and T.. Kcnnclly came off on Thursday. There were about 200 spectators. A heavy shower coming on about 10 o'clock no doubt prevented many from attending. The management was boyond reproach, and it is a pity that the first fixture of these two enterprising and sporting townsmen was not allowed to pass over without the ' crook ' practices of the old-times being revived. The running in the final of tho Cobargo handicap was so suspicious that it was promptly declared no race and all bets off. The whole business was reminiscent of a big crook, schemo worked in Cobargo many years ago and on almost similar lines. The promoters deserve tho greatest credit for their action iu declaring the final no race owing to suspicious practices Happily crooks are few in Cobargo and it is not often a scheme of dodgery can be worked. And the result of Thursday's clumsiness should prove to those concerned that they were dealing w...

French, Sirl, Organ, Godfrey, John son and Hughes dealing with the matter from various standpoints, the Candelo delegate assuring them of the heartwhole co-operation of the Candelo Lodge iu the noble movement. Eventually ' Bro. Hughes proposed — ' That Bega Lodge agrees unconditionally to fall in with the movement and* take its share of the expense.' Bro. Organ seconded. Bro. L. A SOLDIER OF THE ARMY. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 11 November 1905

A SOLDIER OF THE ARMY. Now and again one hears some thing of more than usual interest, even in the Salvation Army barracks. The ' War Cry' con tains in every issue stories of the conversion of sinners and testi monials of the saved. But; these do not interest when one. neither knows the sinner nor is familiar with his particular vices. Such a knowledge is necessary in order that the value of the conversion may be judged and its genuinnes's realised. But the writer on Sunday night wandered into tho Bega barrack room and heard ,: the; story. of a Bega soldiers me. no tins been an Army man for fifteen years; but previous to that period he led quite a different existence, and his history has been printed in the ' War Cry' as an illustration of a 'brand snatched from the burning.' And if the Bega portion of the Army has nothing more to its credit than this evidence of it. good work done it has a record good enough to -justify its existence. - An outand out drunkard and a general hard cas...

HELP FOR THE FALLEN. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 11 November 1905

HELP FOR THE FALLEN. At the Church Society Festival, at St. Andrew's Cathedral on Mon day night, the sermon was preached by the Bishop of Goulburn, who based it on the parable of the Good Samaritan, selecting as his text the 20lh verse of the 10th chapter of St. Luke's Gospel. Having re viewed' the work accomplished on behalf of others by John Howard, Miss Florence Nightingale, and Lord SJiaftesbury, Bishop Barlow asked ' How far, or how near, do wo approach tho spirit of this Samaritan? What are you doing you who call yourselves by the name of Christian to bring the message of Christ to others ?' He asked this, he said, because it brought a blush to bis face as a Bishop that as a Church in this State, they were not large-hearted or liberal enough in their sympathies with those who happened to be outside tho influence of their particular organisations, and tho respectable influence of their rectories and incumbencies. Here in this great Sydney, which Nature had done so much to beaut...

THE TORCHLIGHT HANDICAP [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 11 November 1905

THETORCHLIGHT HANDICAP On Wednesday night Meakcr & (Jtidfi'liill'ri twice postponed torch light handicap was run off at the Central tracks. The promoters have up-lo-'uitu arrangements on the ground, and exercise an un ceasing vigilance overlhe runners — not that it is always necessary, but without it tho public and the peds lose confidence in the manage ment. The tracks are roomy and fast, well lit, and numbered off for tho casual visitor's convenience. Staring the ped in v the face as he comes from the dressing room is a notice (which apparently sometimes escapes him) that run ners arc requested not to speak to the public on the tracks, otherwise they are liable to disqualification. One side of the tracks is reserved for the ollicials and the runners, so that any arrangements for funny business (after 8 o'clock) must be ci inducted by wireless telegraphy. On Wednesday night there was a fair attendance, though not so large as usual. Nevertheless the book makers, Messrs. G. R...

THE LONDON DAIRY SHOW. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 11 November 1905

THE LONDON DAIRY SHOW. Australia is well represented at. the dairy show this year, no fewer than 153 boxes having been entered for competition in the colonial classes. Never before has there been such a large entry, and it is doubtful if the butters have ever been so good. In the salt class there were 80 entries, 48 being from Victoria, 26 from New South Wales five from South Australia, and one from New Zealand. Victoria took the first prize with Grasmere butter, but New South Wales was awarded the second and third, for Alston ville and Boga butters: two other New South Wales butters — those from the Molong District Dairying Company, and the Woodstock Cen tral Dairy Company— being highly commended. Two Victorian butters were highly commended, and four commended. In the fresh class, for which Victoria entered 43 butters, New South Wales 26, South Aus tralia five, and New Zealand one, Victoria took all three prizes, the first going to tho Macarthur Butter Factory, the second to J. M'K...

Bega District Vigilance Association, [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 11 November 1905

Bega District Vigilance Asso ' ciation, The members of this public-spirited body have completed another year of useful work, atul on the 7th of next month the people of Bc.jia ami contiguous centres will be called upon to elect their successors in olliec. There are a few carping critics who try to belittle thesplen ilkl worlc ilono by the earnest, men .who have .without fee or rewaril of any kind met night alter night to persistently urge upon the several Government Departments the ne cessity for carrying out urgent pub lic works which would be for the benefit of all the people in and around Bega, and also those whose business brings them into these districts. But while there are just a few who do not appear to realise, or refuse to admit, the splendid work done bv the Association, the great majority does recognise and appreciate its self-denying labors on behalf of the community. From Our Correspondents. CANDELO. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 11 November 1905

From Our Correspondents. — - ?^' ' ? ? ? CANDELO. The weather this week has been a decided change from tho- recent cold snap. For the past three days tile thermometer has been steadily rising, which the following readings will show — taken at nine o'clock i.m. Monday 68, Tuesday 74, Wednesday 82. Having had such i long spell of cold weather, we feel this sudden change more intensely than if the change had been gradual. A cricket match Married v. Single was to have taken place last Satur day but lapsed on account of the married men not putting in an appearance, and I do not wonder, us the' majority of them were not iware that the match was to he held, until the}' saw their names in Ihe ' Guardian ' that morning. The selection committee should in Euturo communicate, through the secretary, with those members picked or else put their names in a conspicuous place early in the week. Should the present fine weather continue there is every indication that the Spring races, to be held next M...
