The Gippsland Times. "EXCELSIOR." FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 1862. [Newspaper Article] — Gippsland Times — 7 February 1862

t e (ilp Illnh 4 imr. I " EXCELSIO.ii FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 1S62. THE necessity of having Gipps land proclaimed a separate gold field, and having the warden resident in a more central position than Omeo, was fully exemplified in the police court this week by the case of MORROW AND Co. v. MAc MAHON AND ANOTHER. In this paltry affair the country has, in the first instance, to pay the expense of bringing down two prosecutors from the Crooked River to Sale, 120 miles, besides this, two prisoners have to be brought the same dis tance, and lodged here until the day of trial. On that day the prisoners were found guilty of stealing one pennyweight of gold, value, three shillings and ninepence, and were committed to Alberton gaol for one calendar month. Here, again, was another expense that might have been saved; these men had to be forwarded fifty miles further for the purpose of undergoing their sentence, Government having to pay the ex pense of all, and keep them for the period besides. At ...

POLICE NEWS. SALE POLICE COURT. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 1. Before the Resident Magistrate. [Newspaper Article] — Gippsland Times — 7 February 1862

POLICE NEWS: SALE POLICE COURT. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 1. Befre the Resident Magistrate. W. HAYWARD V. C. NOON.   Mr. Atkinson appeared for the defence. Prosecutor said that he came to the Commercial Hotel, Bairnsdale, on the previous Monday. That he had then in his possession two silver watches, a gold watch and chain, and a ring attached to the latter. Gave one of the watches to the landlord, but does not know if he gave the gold watch to any one. Missed   the gold watch on Tuesday or Wednes day and made inquiries about it, asked the landlord if he knew anything about it, also asked the housemaid, who now stands charged with steealing the watch; but does not recollect what she said. The watch now produced is the same as I lost. I left the house on Thursday without the watch, and never saw it again until now. The prosecutor was cross-ex   amined by Mr. Atkinson; and acknow ledged that during his stay in the house he was drunk the best part of the ...
