Winged Motor Car. [Newspaper Article] — Raymond Terrace Examiner and Lower Hunter and Port Stephens Advertiser — 6 September 1912

Winged Motor Car. A succe.-sful trial run was made the other day from Paris to Lyons, about 320 miles, by a motor car driven by a revolving wing. The vehi'-le, which was designed by M. Bertraud d,c Lessep-, and is called tli.i ' winged car,' has the appearance of an ordinary motor car, save that in front it is shaped like the prow oi a ship. 1 rom the ex tremity of the prow extends a shaft to which is attached the propeller — or revolving wiug — iuveiued by M. Filippi. The wing is small, strong, and thick (no exact measurements are available), aud revolves within a protecting cage. The engine is of 40 h.p., aud rotates the wing by shaft and chain transmission. There is no other mechanism, the wheels of the car being free, except for foot brakes. By the side of the driver is a single lever which con trols the clutch and llie forward and reverse movement of the wiug. The wiug can be reversed at a moment's notice, theroby forming an addition d i i. nil. i i ? i i untKe. iue car compiet...

The Speaker of the New South Wales. Assembly has proved himself a remark able man in many ways. . When elected Speaker he really believed that a tnissipn had to come to him to clean up the angean stables as it were, and to straighten up the disorders which, he says, had existed iu the House for some time. This is characteristic of his many peculiarities, aud was a reflection ou past speakeis ; but that did not. matter. Mr, UMIIk li'irt ii tniccwm in 1itV- Wlc is to throw out reporters who belong to daily papers, because the papers have been what he calls disrespectful to the Speaker. How the public will like this we have not yet gauged, but it would be remarkable if they did not forcibly resent such a gross breach of an enlightened period's heritage. There was a time (we seem to be approaching it again, or are we in it?) when the Parliament of Britain sat in Star Chamber fashion, and the people knew nothing of what laws or rights, or anything else,, that may be going on. Points in Maize Sowing [Newspaper Article] — Raymond Terrace Examiner and Lower Hunter and Port Stephens Advertiser — 6 September 1912

Points in Maize Sowing Olio of llie considerations that the tnaiae-grower must regard is the dis tauee by which the plants should bo separated. It depends ou several favors, and the inspector for the north-west district expresses his . opinion thus: — 'As a rule, the greater the fertility ot' the soil the more room should the plauls he given.'7 In rich sou, with a lair amount of moisture, great growth is made, aud if the crop is too thick sunlight is excluded to the detriment of llie cobs, whereas ou light soils the 'stalks are less luxuriant aud the cobs no larger, so that the net result of giving each plant more room is the unnecessary reduction of the yield. I At Teulerfield, for instance, where a large amount of rna ze is grown, the stalks appear absurdly short to j one accustomed to coastal crops, yet I il ? ? I I ?
