OBITUARY [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 8 October 1897

OBTTUAEY. I regret to have to record the death of Miss Annie Barnett, which took place on the first day of Rosh Hashona. The deceased lady is a sister o£ Mr. Isaac Barnett, of Dowling Street, Sydney, and has been residing in Queensland for many years. She had been ail ngfor some considerable time past, and death imust have been a happy relief. The funeral took place on the afternoon of the second day of Rosh Hashona, which necesitated the .chazon walk ing to the cemetery some 4 miles out of town. Notwithstanding the unpuopifcuous state of the weather there was a fair attendance of mourn ers and friends at the grave, at which the Rev. A. T. Chodows^i, officiated. The coffin was covered with many beautiful wreaths sent by many intimate friends. Mr. Joseph Benjamin of 'Warwick (brother in law of the deceased) attended to the necessary arrangements. New Year Services. Oration by the Rev. A. B. Davis. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 8 October 1897

Hew Year Sgnrfces* Oration by tl\e Rev. A. B. Davis. : ?'' Evening, and morning, and noon, will I pray and call aloud and he shall bear my voice.'j ? - ? . Psalm LV. 17, When Rosh Hoshanah days arrives ; when we take note how another year has been ?added to our life, and we are brought another rraav ripfliw tiVifl time when the mysterious spirit breathed within us at our birth shall take to itself wings and go hence; we are naturally im pelled to take count of the term that has lapsed; pass in review its moving incidents; examine the manner we have employed its hours ; and consider how we have fulfilled the obligations laid upon us for our own benefit, and for the glorifying of our Divine Father. It is no wonder then, such being the way Israelites, in all ages, have ushered in the New Year, that we should assemble in the Sacred Temple of God- worship in our hundreds and thousands to pour out our souls before the Supreme Being, and offer up a heartfelt thanksgiving for the life ?that...

SABBATH OF REPENTANCE. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 8 October 1897

SABBATH OF REPENTANCE. Oration by it\e Rev. J. H- Landau. f The Eev. J. H. Landau last Saturday, took for his text, Prepare to meet thy God, 0 'Israel — Amos iv. v., 12 , and delivered the 'following oration : ; Since we met here on the last Sabbath of Repentance, some who worshipped with us then in accustomed health, have been summoned behind the veil, . never to return. While we were about, our work as usual, thinking of the Jfchings of the day, our friends had the privilege of being rid of the miseries of this present world by passing through the gate of death. We will not say in the hazy language of a faithless conventionality that ' they have gone to the grave,' or, ' lie asleep within the tomb,' because we know that the man himself, the woman herself has no more to do with the ftead flesh and the co'd blood, than they have *to do with the clothes which they have left off for ever, or the chair on which they will never 'sit again. It is certainly right that the out Ward form wi...

Our Brisbane Letter. BRISBANE, OCTOBER 4th., 1897. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 8 October 1897

Our Brisbane Letter. . ? * ? Bbisbane, October 4th., 1897. On the occasion of the New Tear services were held as usual in the Synagogue, when a large number of the congregation were pre sent. The Rev. A. T. Choodwski officiated, assisted by Mr. Jonas Myers. Before Musaf the Rev. A. T, Ohodowski delivered an impressive sermon taking for his text :— ' Behold the fire and the wood ! But where is the lamb for the burnt offering.' G-enescis xxii, 7. In ihe course of his remarks the rev. gentleman offered some reflections as to the flight of time, and the mercies and good ness of G-od during the past, went on to point out that to be faithful pure in life and in thought, loving our neighbours as ourselves, loving, for bearing, G-od fearing, helping the suffering and sorrowing, to be fairdealing and charitable, humble and contrite, these were the acceptable sacrifices to G-od. How easy and pleasant to a soul searching for the higher happiness was it to rest on the Sabbath day and kept it ho...

Our Victorian Letter. Rev. J. Lenzer on "Converts" to Judaism TUESDAY, OCTOBER 5th, 1897. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 8 October 1897

:Qur Victorian Letter* I Rev. JL Lenzer oq ' Converts ' to Judaism « I Tuesday, October 5fch, 1897. The Rev. J. Lenzer preached at the East 'Melbourne Synagogue this morning to a large congregation. In the course of an impassion ed address, he spoke of the time when at the sound of the Shofer, or trumpet all the people of the earth would assemble together, irres pective of the distinction of Jews and Gentiles. Dealing with the question — a burning one now in Jewry — of Proselytes to Judaism, the preacher pointed out that the Rabbis were strongly opposed to it. He considered such . conversions undesirable, both from the relig ious and citizens aspect, and stated that the East Melbourne congregation felt very strong ly in the matter. It may be added, on the authority of a prominent member of the con gregation, that the report of a c.immifctee ap pointed on the motion of Dr. Abrahams, to enquire into the whole subject is being eagerly looked for. It is also stated that one individ ual ...

Social and General. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 8 October 1897

[?] The engagement is announced of Miss Ethel deLissa. daughter of Montague deLissa, to Mr. Arthur Ben sussan. An extraordinary number of visitors called on Mr. Pulyer on Kippur day, but they were not permitted to see him. The report of his physician is ' that he is about the same.' The escape of gas while the Synagogue is being lit at night must be obviated.. There is much cause for complaint in this direction. Do not forget the Succah at the Montefiore Home. Donations in kind are most urgently solicited. Mrs. Barnett, at the Home, will receive donations in cash for the purchase of necessaries for the Succah. The Succah will be opened on Sunday evening. The telephones were busy on Wednesday evening conveying fraternal news and inquiries. In fact, the Exchange could hardly understand the rush. The attendances at the Synagogue were as large as any ever held in Sydney. A large number of country visitors were in town for the holy days. There are many whiskeys in the market, but few, if...

The absorbing topic of Wedneday evening last was ' How did you fast ?'; ?' What did you break your fast on,' ?- Our experience is that the palate becomes very sensitive, and for taking your fast and to avoid nausea you cannot drink anything better than a well made cup of ' GlobeTea.'' And we are sure there are many will agree that it is delightful after fasting all day. No adulterations being possible as Messrs. Atcherley & Dawson, 257 George-street, are the agents. A man often gets credit for having sense enough to say nothing when the truth is that he hasn't sense enough to say anything. . .
