THE FITZROY CITY PRESS. SATURDAY, FEBUARY 25, 1882. [Newspaper Article] — Fitzroy City Press — 25 February 1882

THE FITZROY C'ITY PRESS. SATURDAY. FEBUARY. ?l5, IS. TInE presence of the Russian Squadron in the bay has caused attention to be directed to the state of our defences. It is ieedless to say that our condition is as well known to the Russi ius as it is to ourselves, and that it is impossible to deceive them or any of the other great powers as to our actual position. The Australian colonies are remarkably rich and would form a nmagnificient prize for any nation, and one well worth a great struggle for possession. They.nre at present in a. throughlv de fencele-ss state and could offer no elfect nal resistance to a well disciplitied in rading force. The natural advantages of the colonies for defence purposes are great, and Victoria could be rendered well nigh impregnable, except to a " large body of land foices !capable, of acting independently of the fleet.
