(FROM OUR 00ooRttREPOD'T.) .Much sympathy has been expressed throughout this district with Mr and Mrs Edward Giddens as the result of the tragic and sudden death of their second soen, Oonstable Edward Geddene, formerly of Mellbourne, but latterly of Ch.rlton. The deceased was in the habit of going out shooting wild fowl, and his death was caused evidently tey the acoidental exieloion .of his otun. Mr and Mrs Giddens, although now residing at Thlnrnnry, were native horn residents of the Whittlesea Shire, and were respected residents of the Shire, and still reanin a considerable interest in property therein at Doreen. BUNDOORA. (rano otan cORnesPO.PDENT.) On Jone 23rd, in lieu of celebrating Arbor Day at 8.S. 1915, it was decided to make a local effort in aid of the British Red Oross. There was a very large attendance present and a full pro gramnme of ladies' and children's races, atc, was goon through, as well as some horse events. The juldges'wera Messrs B. Ewins and W. Brclk The bunters' contest was won by Mr J. White, flag race by Mr B. Weir, who gavo his pricm to the fund. The walk, trot, and gallop prize was won by Mr E. Lynch. The entries for the above events were nltnerous and keenly competed for. During the afternoon the ladies pro vided tea and refreshments, which anro much appreciated ; they also provided tea in the erening. At night a concurt was held to augment the funds, which was largely attended. Mr W. Brock, J.P., was Chairman. Everything passed off well, and a most enjoyable evening was spent. In aid of the Schools' effort for the British Red Cross a most successful concert was given in the local Hall on Saturday evening, 7th inst., by the State school children, assisted by local and visiting artists. The Hall was crowded. Air Bradbury, Chairman of School Committee, presided over a long and varied programme. A special feature of thoevening was that of Miss Cox, swirurming expert of the Education Department, who gave a lecturetto on the modes of rescue and release, and also of the laltest resusci tation methods. The lectarette was illustrated by ten boys, who: had carried out the Oexpert's directions faithfully, andi received due credit for the same. The performers wore enter tained to supper. Harris (Chairman of the Panton Hill School Committee) :- Education Offico, Melbourno, 5th July, 1917. Dear Mr. M'Auliffeo,-Your favor of 2nd to hand. I cannot visit Panton Hill on Friday next as I have a very full woek arranged for. Please toll the school from me that we are all very pleased at the fine work they have clone for the Patriotio Fund, and we hope that they will not relax their efforts. The Young.Workers' Patriotic Guild is steadily increasing in numbers, and a very large number of children who gained a cortifioate for having oarned £1 and given it to the Patriotic Fund have now boon awarded a seal to their certificates showing that they have earned and given £5. Those doing lfast or heavy work shouhi be clipped; if not. wholly, then trace high. Those not rugged on coming into the stable atulight should be wiped down and In hal--an-hour's time rugged or covcred with bars until the coat is dry. (Old horses nldl vcianed foal. should be given crushed oats. Grass-fed workingl lhotses slaoitll he given hay or straw, it there is no old grass, to counteract the purging effects of the young growth. WHITTLESEA S HIRE COUNCIL. MlONDAY, 2ND JuvY, 1917. The ordinary mountlly meeting of the above Council was held at the Mechanics' Institute, Mernda, on Monday last. Present :--The Presi dent (Cr Clarke) and Urs Brown, Cornfoot, Hardy, Hurrrey, MCorniack, Mitchell, Morgan, Murphy, Roid, Sutherland and Thomas. COn ESPONDENCIR. Shire Solicitors. Letters were read from Mr Sahel. berg and from Mr Gummow, intl. mating that their term of partnership had terminated. Mr Sabelberg was present and Mr Gammow, by letter, solicited a share of the Council's busi ness for himself and partner (Mr Gray). The President said that as the part. nership between Mr Sabelborg and Mr Gummow had terminated the Council were without Standing Counsel.
