CRICKET. [Newspaper Article] — Deloraine and Westbury Advertiser — 21 January 1911

CRICKET. This match played at Launceston cn Tuesday Wednesday 'J hursdsy proved veiy interesting. On the first day South" Africa put up 364 for eight wickets. The chief events were the partnership of Nourse and Zulch, and the heavy hitting by Pegler, who made 50 in fourteen minutes. The principal scores were made by Nourse (141), Zulch (76), Pegler (50) and Pearse (41), Thomas did some wendel lui wicket-keeping, not a single bye being scored. The seer ucl e:ays pay was sen- sational. The other two South Africans were.put out without scor- ing, leaving the total 364. When Tasmania started, Chancellor opened with-a duck, then Martin and Smith made a big stand, and the 1 est failed to make any decent scores, the inn- ings closing for 239. Immigration. [Newspaper Article] — Deloraine and Westbury Advertiser — 21 January 1911

, Immigration. The Melbourne papéis at the present time have daily, column upon column of matter dealing with the influx of population from overseas. From these we see something of thc work that is being done to attract a desirable class of immigrant to Aus- tralia. On every hand evidences arc found that the tide of immigration from Gi eat Brittan las turned to- wards the Commonwealth. Thou- sands are arriving every month, and it would appear very probable that within the next few yeais the addi- tion to the population by immigration *ill amount to a very great number. This is as it should be, and we believe that as long as the increase is u natural one, and as long as land is made available for new ari ¡vals as . they come the population of Austra- lia will be doubled in a short lime. At the present time there are not five million people in the Common- wealth, so that we are in practically the same condition that the United States of America were in 100 years ago. It is sometimes s...

He use:l to ^o strong in Mersey, hut the Council has been altering boundaries and a lot of Me sey is eil in red iato Meander, and the other part isn't Micholls country, I think myself Bert knows mire ahmt handicapp- ing chopping matches than he does about Politic But still, Mr Editor he is fair-I have known plenty worse. A BORROWING POLITICIAN. PRIME MINISTER FLOATS A LOAN [Newspaper Article] — Deloraine and Westbury Advertiser — 21 January 1911

I A BORROWING j POLSTÏCIAN. PRIME MINISTER FLOATS A LOAN To be T easurer of such a huge concern a- the Commonwealth and yet to bi on occasion to be unable to produce the humble "copper'' is an anomoiy which is as curious as it is late. When it does occur it is worth chronicling aud storing up in that storehouse to which all good stories are relegated, there to be carefully preserved until such time as they are brought f irth to give material to the recjutetir of matters amusing. There was a "penniless" Treasurer in Launceston on Tuesday, a certain Mr. Andrew Fidler, who guards the coffers to which the Federal Ministry alone has access. He had come to this city on a holi- day jaunt, and it is not known whether he cv.-n brought a Federal bankoo'e with which t . pay his way. One thing is certain He did not have a penny. How it came to be found out will bear telling Mr. Fisher and his party on leaving the Loon- gana were taken in hand by the Mayor (Alderman \V C. Oldham), and motored th...
