THE PROPOSED JUDGESHIP AT ROOKHAMPTON. (From the Brisbane Courier.) [Newspaper Article] — Rockhampton Bulletin — 13 February 1872

IBB PROPOSED JUDGESHIP AT ROOK HAMPTON. {From the Brieiane Courier.) Tire petition for the appointment of a Resident Jodee at Rockhampton, which waa presented to the Legislativo Assembly during the last session, is a somewhat tautological and inconsistent document. It sets out that the petitioners I "hare been nnd ara often compellod to seek protection, nssistsnce, and aid from the Supreme Court in Brisbane," nnd a few lines lower down nfllrms (hat they "seldom, if ever, avail thein selvea of the law as administered by tho Judges of the Supremo Court.1' In fact, on the faco of the petition itself it would seem that there was after ell little real cause for complaint, except in matters of insolvency. This last, however, wc may perhaps hope to see rcmodied if air. Braraeton'e bill has anything like fair treatment in thc coming session ; and for the rest it is questionable whether thc fiting of an increased maximum sum for the jurisdiction of thc Dis- trict Courts would not do a very g...

THE DRY EARTH SYSTEM. [Newspaper Article] — Rockhampton Bulletin — 13 February 1872

THE DEY EABTH SYSTEM". AMONG tho Parliamentary papers just to hand is a Tory valuable one entitled " Tho Dry Earth System." tt consists ol a despatch from thc Secretary of State for the Colonies to thc Gorornor of Queensland, covering " Reports on Certain Means of Preventing Eioremeut Nuisanoes in Towns and Tillages," by Dr. Buchanan, who, says Earl Kimberley, "is a ?distinguished sanitary physician, and as one of the Inspectors of the Medical Department of tho Privy Council, has conducted a number of scientific experiments oonneoted with hygiene." The subject is not on attractive one, but to the cititons of Rockhampton its importance cannot be over-rated. In a tropical climate, ond in a town for thc most part situated on a flat difficult of drainage, we are daily sowing the saeds of disease and death. We hare no system of sewage, and no proper means of getting rid of the inodorous contents of tho30 out-offices, which aro a necessary to every dwelling. The rosult is that in warm wea...

The Rockhampton Bulletin AND CENTRAL QUEENSLAND ADVERTISED. TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 1872. [Newspaper Article] — Rockhampton Bulletin — 13 February 1872

AMD CENTBAT, QUEENSLAND ADVERTISED. TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 1872. THE petition sent from Rockhampton some months ogo, praying for the appointment of a resident judge of Ibo Supremo Court for this town, is meeting with natural opposition from persons interested at Brisbane. Quito forgetting how necessary a resident judge at More- ton Bay was deemed some fourteen years ago, our Brisbane friends arc very sceptical as to the real necessity for a resi- dent judge at Rockhampton now. They would appoint an assistant registrar empowered to transact routine business ; they would extend tho jurisdiction of the District Courts to Insolvency ; and they would appoint another District Court judge. Anything, in fact, but yield that which we and tho other northern people ask and are fully .entitled to-the establishment of a branch of the Supremo Court at Rock- hampton. So much we glean from 'perusing an article published ia the Courier of yesterday week. Tho Courier begins the attack by pointing but ...

PEAK DOWNS. [Newspaper Article] — Rockhampton Bulletin — 13 February 1872

PEAK DOWNS. THE Telegram of Saturday week carno to hand lost evening. The following are extract* : - Business hos been very brisk during the past fortnight, and the delay of goods on tho road caused by the wet weather is already beginning to be felt. Stocks of boer in bottle are com- pletely exhausted; flour is rather low, and some other articles aro getting sca-ce ; but no apprehensions prevail of a scarcity that will affect prices, as a great many drays arc on tho rood at no great distance from town. Great satisfaction is felt at the month of January having passed by without any signs of e flood. Sandy Greek has not even run, and it is generally thought that tho town will esoape this year. Considerable excitement has been caused in mining circles by tho fine dividend declared by the Copper Company, and prospecting for copper and coal has been stimulated. It is reported that two new companies are being formed to work lodes in the neighbourhood. The supply of feed and water in every...
