The Plying Machine _ WE aro informed by our Paris correspondent that1 Slr. Ralph Stott, tho inventor of tho new " ñying machine;" is compelled to postpono his promised flight ac rene the Channel until a clearer 'atmosphere permits of his .making his during attempt. He is 'consequently prolonging his viBÍt to Berlin,' whither he" was recently invited by Prince Bismarck, and'* where hu has been showing.the particulars of his invention to tho Minister of War, , and to vuriouH notabilities of the army and navy, without howovöv dislosing the secret of the mechanism ot whose success ho seems so certain. All ' that the world . is yet permitted to know o£ the new invention is that the flying appaiAtuR. built on the balance system consists of a toloi-nbly deep ship, built of wood in tho midst of which is, the machine. which furnishes the motive power, and which . is sot iii motton by a wheel like the helm of a steamer. Tho frumo ot'tho plough is of an ordinary description, but tho boby, instead of being nttachod in the usual way, isuuspendod adout turne inches behind tho wheels, the turn i'unow running buck tho usual length. The coultor, which is attached to tho budy of tho plough instead of to tho fi arno, slants in a backward diiootion, and .projects half an inch in front of nnd below the aliare,* thus projecting' it from contact with stumps. or routs. The ontiro body is kopt in position by tho action of a 50-lb. compound lever, which concentrates a forco of 600 lbs. on tho point of tho share. How a Bird Flies. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Star — 13 January 1877

How a Bird Flies. THE moat prominent fact about a bird ia a faculty, in -whick it differs from every other creature except the bat and insects-its power of fiyirig. - For this purpose the bird's arm ends in* only oue long slender finger instead of a full hand. To this are attached the quills and small feathers (coverts) on the upper aide, which make up the wing. Observe how light all this is. In thc first place, the bones are hollow, and, finally, the feathers themselves aro made of the most delicate filaments, 'interlocking and clinging to one another with little grasping hooks of micro scopic fineness. Well, how does a bird fly Î It seems simple enough to describe, and yet it is a problem that tho wisest in such matters have not yet worked out to everybody's satisfaction.
