- The Care of Water Boiler. The officers of the Oregon claim that her tremendous exploit in running that never to be forgotten race against time in order to be in at the death of the Spanish flet is to a certain extent traceable tc the fact that salt water was never allowed in her boilers. There have been many discissions pro and eon on the advisability of using salt water. One old engineer declares that if he could run his boilers with rain water they would outlast the men who run them. Be that as it may. there surely is some fault in the management of boilers when they give out so quickly. There are various compounds that are recommended for use ;n boilers, but most of them have some s.rong alkaline ingredient, which is never good for metal of any kind. It would be well to experiment with rain water with a view to ascertaining Itl value for such uses. Tanks and catch pans mfgbt be expensive, but once arranged they are what one might call fixed property, if they save the value of a...

n?e3nbepenfcent Friday, Nov km her 4, 18U8. HITS l'LVMOVTH BFI IBL1CA N HAKI) The South Bend Times editorially says: "The close of a political ca npaign, whether excited or tame, protracted or short, is welcomed by a great majority of newspapers. The campaign that is rapidly approaching its close has in some respects been the most remarkable in the history of the country. There has been less mud throwing, less lying, less slandering than in any preceding campaign. The people, as a whole, greatly appreciate this change for the better. Only depraved persons look with favor on the disreputable methods once so prevalent in the political world." The Times evidently had in view the "Grinner" when it says that "only depraved persons look with favor or the disreputable methods once so prevalent in the political world-" For the benefit of the Times, we can give the information that the reformation sought, is hopeless. It is simply a case of jackass, "no pride of ancestry, and no hope of the ...

Comfort for Women. Some time ago Pullman's Palace Car company built three parlor cars for the B. & O.'s New York trains, and the radical departure from other cars of this character lay in the toileT room for iaiies. which was eight feet in length. Recently the same company has built eight new sleepers for the New York-St. Louis line c;f the B. & (.. and the designer of the ears has evidently been impelled b) the popularity of the ladies' retiring room in the parlor car.- to give to the ladies a vast deal more space than they ever had before in sleeping cars. These new cars are said by the Pullman people to he the finest they ever turned out, and the ladies' retiring room is exceedingly commodious, and contains, besides other toilet necessities, a dresser with a lone pier glass. The cars are finished in vermilliou wood, decorated with inlaid marquetry woi k. and the upholstery on the backs and seats is entirely new and different from any heretofore used, being...

Cf?e3nbepenbcnt Fkiday, Notembkb 11, 1806. I WILL LKAKX (II R VAU K. In the campaign just finished the Independent has pursued an honest conviction without a single promise of pationage from a single candidate. Whether or not the democratic candidates and managers have appreciated our course, we do not know ; whether we have been bene ficial in bringing about the results we submit to the candidates themselves ; we expect to learn how much this paper and its influence has been appreciated by the future consideration accorded it. If the Independent is hereafter recognized with an equitable portion of patronage at the disposition of democratic county otricials and democratic workers, we will know that our efforts have been valued. The editor of this paper is selfish enough to desire a substantial appreciation of his labors and believes that in the future he will have no reason to complain. The Chicago Democrat, until recently known as the Dispatch, has made an assignment for the benefi...
