REASON SPRING IS COLD . A Simple Explanation o ! a Fre -quent Question , [Newspaper Article] — Urbana Daily Courier — 6 March 1903

REASON SPRING IS COLD . A Simple Explanation o ! a Frequent Question , Why This Time ol ( he Year Is Not So Warm as in ( he Early Autumn—Some Interesting Facts . The question is frequently asked , how is it that the late winter and early spring are so much colder than the late fall and early winter ? Why should it not be as warm on , the 21 st of -March as it is on ishe 21 st of September ? The answer usually given is that toward the autumn the crust of the earth is warm and some heat is given out to counteract the approaching blasts of winter , while in the spring the frozen earth requires some heat to thaw it out . That , however , is but a very small agency in the matter . The principal cause of the difference in temperatures at corresponding dates is this : As the north pole tips away , from the sun after ithe autumnal equinox , the air at and around the pole , losing the heat of the solar orb . becomes chilled and contracts in volume . The air from the south then rushes in to r...

All right ! reserved . chapter vrrr . THE HOP-DANCE . That Mian Morton should regard her cousin and Rossiter with amazei ment was but natural . On both their faces something unusual was written , on Miss Densmore s exhaustion , and the lingering traces of a dreadful four , on Hosslter s a mingled sternness and solicitude . What lias happened ? Miss Merton cried . Your cousin has had a terrible fright , said Rossiter , quickly . He paused and glanced at Miss Densmore . He had spoken thus that she might bo saved an explanation if she did not feel that she could make one just then . She gave him a grateful look as she sank upon the seat before the spring . For a moment she gazed at the welling water , then she put her hands to her face and began to sob softly . In an instant Miss Merton s arms were about her cousin , and Eoss...
