Sunshine in the- Barn [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 1 June 1884

Sunshine in the- Barn In an address before a body of prominent agriculturists Dr . Nichols some time ago presented some curious and interesting fnformanion , which can scarcely bo put into a more readable form than that which follows . Dr . Nichols said : The stored sunshine in our barns in the form of hay and grain is , in its utilization , attended by losses corresponding with those connected with change in other forms of organized material . In mod- , ern barns properly constructed we are astonished to find how comfortable tho temperature is when we enter them on the oold mornings of winter . It may be difficult for many farmers to realize that this warmth all comes from the contents of their hay-mows and grain-bins—from actual burning or cumbustion of these nutrient materials . The long rows of cows and oxen in the stalls may be properly likened to an arrangement of little stoves , in whioh the products of the summer fields are burned ; each animal representing a stove of greate...

Potato Culture . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 1 June 1884

Potato Culture . Probably no vegetable with which the farmer has to deal is of greater importance , the world over , than the potato . Therefore , any hints by which the grower may be enabled to improve the crop in yield or quality must be regarded as seasonable . The nature of potatoes and the proper mode of culture need to be understood in order to succeed . They require strong , lively soil . Never plant them in cold , sad , thin or exhausted soil . Plow deep , plant midway in plowed soil , and there is room for the hill to form and the fibrous , feeding roots to penetrate below . If the ground is sufficiently mellow , do not harrow before planting . When they begin to puncture the surface in coming up , harrow thoroughly both ways , when the surface is not wet . This effectually destroys the first weeds and grasses and puts the ground in good order for cultivating . When two or three inches high , stir the ground thoroughly close to the sprouts . The potatoes then have a soft , ...

Digging Wells . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Fireside — 1 June 1884

Digging Wells . The Massachusetts Ploughman some time since had the following directions in regard to digging wells : The old way of digging a well and stoning it up so as to leave it about three feet in diameter , is a very good one if the water is to be drawn up with buckets ; but if only with a pnmp . it is a very poor way ; for if , as is the usual custom , the well be covered at the top , it leaves a very large space for dead air , which often becomes so bad that it effects the quality of the water , and also makes it unsafe to enter the well . When a well thus stoned has only a pump in it , the covering should be under water , or very near it ; but if it is known that only a pump is to be used the expense of stoning may be saved , and the water be kept in a much better condition . This is done by digging the well in a dry time , and when dug as low as possible a cement pipe , some two feet in diameter , and two or three feet long , is sunk at the bottom and worked down as low ...

THE BOSS INCUBATOR . An Inoubator , to successfully meet the growing demand felt by every farmer and poultry man who desires to take advantage of the profit to be derived from hatohing and marketing early spring chickens , must be constructed in a substantial manner , upon time-tried and thoroughly tested principles . It must be simple in construction , with no automatib or difficult dock work machinery that is liable to break , or from some cause or other cease to work at just the time it should be perfectly trustworthy .
