Possessing a soil of phenomenal richness it remains practically unoccupied . Several successive waves of settlement have invaded these fertile plains only to rebound when drouth asserted itself . Undoubtedly the normal precipitation of this section during the crowing months is insufficient to produce abundant crops when methods adapted to more liumid climates are used . Irrigation by storing water in the Rocky mountains is proposed , but the project is by many regarded as chimerical Once the grazing croundsof countlessherds of buffalo , overstocking of the ranges has well nigh killed the luxuriant native grasses and the future of the sub-arid district is at present a matter of co...

Wisdom by Vrestdent McFadden [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 9 January 1902

Wisdom by Vrestdent McFadden WHAT W . M . MoFaddetT . of West Liberty , la ., President of the Iowa Improved Livo Stock Breeders Association told that body at the annual meetingheld . recently at Jefferson , Ia , to worthy ot attention in the memory . Calling attention to changing conditions Mr . MoFadden emphasised tbe fact that cheap land had gone never to return and that easy conditions prevailed when cheap land permitted wanton waate of fertility had likewise departed . Mr . MoFadden rigorously scored the wanton waste practiced by oorn belt farmers and declared that wholesale farming was responsible for much of it , planters overworking themselves to get in a large acreage of one or two special crops only to be unequal to the task of properly cultivating them . He urged the necessity of smaller and better cultivated grain fields and larger areas of pasture adding that : The farmer with grass going to waste is invariably the most successful . Mr . Late Literary Jiotes . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 9 January 1902

Late Literary Jiotes . Are England , Scotland and Ireland destined , ultimately , to become a part of The United States of America and Great Britain ? to the startling inquiry whioh William T . Stead makes In the January COSMOPOLITAN . He haa been one of the prophets of Great Britain , and has , at all times , been able to see in advance of hia contemporaries—as events have proven . He haa beea studying the new conditions brought about by the Industrial combinations , and reaches the conclusion that England aad tbe United States are destined to be more closely united , and that as soon as the English people wake up to the absurdity and general uselassness , as has been shown . in the Boer War , of . a king aad aristocracy , tbe trend will be immediate in the direction of a union with the people of the United States . However much one may differ from Mr . Stead , his speculations will be found vastly interesting . He is the first British subject who has had tiie courage to suggest sn...

THE HORSE MARKET . Market Feels the Strain of the Increased Receipts . i MOST URGENT ORDERS FILLED Receipts for the Week to Yesterday s Close 1 . 669 Against 1 , 851 Same Time Last Year . Conditions at the opening this morning indicated clearly that the market is hardly ln shape to hold up under such large receipts . Receipte for the week thus far are about 1 , 700 or 200 more than the corresponding week last year . Buyers began buying quite heavily early in the week and before the close yesterday afternoon the majority ofthe urgent orders were pretty well filled .
