POPULAR ERRORS . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 March 1875

POPULAR ERRORS . The objects of Natural History surround us upon every hand . . They are our useful animals and plants , our pets and companions , our foes and torments . Connected with ourselves in physical structure and attributes , each one , from the elephant to the mosquito , from the tree to the toadstool , helps to make the world what it is , and should be , as they generally are , objects of intense interest to us . But if our knowledge of them is important , how necessary that we sift well the false notions and opinions from the trustworthy facts—that , though we spoil some traditional stories and explode some so-called philosophical explanations , we separate truth from falsehood , and rest our own knowledge upon careful observation ! It may neither make us richer nor poorer , happier nor more miserable to believe that the rabbit chews his cud or does not do M > , but the foci has nothing to do with belief . As a fact it is well worth investigation . Reader , wh...

A VACATION RECREATION- [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 March 1875

A VACATION RECREATION- COG-TOOTH . On departing from Galena , nothing of special interest transpired until after embarking upon a Mississippi flat-boat at Dunleith , for a short sail up that wonderful river which is noted for its turbidity , its changeable channels and shore lines . The boat was one of considerable pretensions , impressing the passenger at first with a feeling of security in spite of his recollections of the almost daily and frightful boat disasters of the Mississippi of some years ago . It was a side-wheel , and resembled some of the staunch steamers of the Great Lakes . , A peculiarity at first noticed , however , was that the boat had what might seem to be two immense antlers , one upon each side of the bow . They were double , and jointed , and so provided with ropes and tackle as to be made veiy useful in case the boat should run a-ground , by lifting and pushing off the forward end . After fairly under way , and the first excitement and curiosity of river boat...

THE MOUNTAIN IN THE WOODS . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 March 1875

THE MOUNTAIN IN THE WOODS . As the steamer was to remain a day at the delightful harbor of Osage Island , to allow the excursionists to enjoy the beautiful scenery and to do the extensive lead mines for which the place is noted , a party was formed to visit the famous Mountain in the Woods , 20 miles in the interior . By almost superhuman exertions we managed to secure a mule team and a lumber wagon . Bidding friends and civilization farewell we started . Our road ran through a dense bush of beech , birch , cedar , maple , and pine , was rarely ever traveled , and , as may be supposed , was none of the best . Our driver was a brilliant success in his line . Not a single stump on the whole route was intentionally missed . Although seemingly a half-crazed youth he was familiar with the laws of momentum and accelerated his speed in proportion to the roughness of the road . Finally tiring of the slow jolting vehicle we alighted leaving the driver to his own destruction and walked on ahe...

MEN OF HISTORY-MARAT . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 March 1875

MEN OF HISTORY-MARAT . HY C . O . S . When relatives and friends , after the disastrous conclusion of the marriage ceremonies of Louis XVI , were searching in the darkness for their lost on that terrible field of death , there was found operating rapidly and skillfully upon the maimed humanity brought before him , a young man , though his yellow complexion was faded like that of one aged . His flabby eyelids covered the eyes of a serpent , and his mouth was distorted like that of an epileptic in a fit . His sleeves turned up to his elbows , his arms covered with blood , and surrounded with human trunks , lie seemed more like an executioner at his work , or an enthusiast at his trade , than a surgeon accomplishing his mournful and holy work . Assistance ! assistance ! cried an old man , approaching . The people first ! the men of the people . I am not a gentleman returned he who had applied . I am a man of the people . My name is Rousseau . Place for the emancipator of humanity , for...

" AGRICULTURAL GRADUATES " . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 March 1875

AGRICULTURAL GRADUATES . BY J . M . GREGORY The St . Louis Globe has an article under this caption , in which the writer , after a long series of totally irrelevant matter , gives in the following sensible paragraph , the very palpable reason for the failure , of agricultural students to become agriculturists : We need not seek far to find the causes of this dcertion from the . agricultural army . The fact is , that farmers encourage their sons and . daughters to become educated , in order that they may find some means of rising in the world that will be easier and more rapid than farming . If they only knew—which they never will , though it be told them every day of the year—they have the best and safest business the world , can give them . If they only knew—nine out of ten of the lawyers will starve through this lifc , and into the next , or go brokenly on from one failure to another . If they only knew—more than nine out of ten of the merchants become bankrupts , or subside into ...

THE SCIENTIFIC ASSOCIATION . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 March 1875

THE SCIENTIFIC ASSOCIATION . The Scientific Association deserves a word of credit and praise for the progress and improvement they have made , and the work and good they are accomplishing . Though scientific in aim and purpose , the Association does much towards developing the literary talents of . its members . Besides the regular essays , readings , declamations and orations of the literary societies , they have lectures and discussions on scientific subjects ; and the Scientific Reporter . Their discussions differ from the debates only in the fact that members speak on whatever side of the question they choose , and that the president docs not render a decision . Among the subjects of late discussion may be mentioned Spontaneous Generation , Literature of Science , and The Glacial and Iceberg Theory of Transportation . Occasionally they have debates , as was the case on Friday evening , the iath ult ., when they decided in favor of the negative the question , Resolved : That the ...

OUR EXCHANGES . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 March 1875

OUR EXCHANGES . The Iowa Classic has in the January number only five columns out of fourteen devoted to church matters . They say itls issued largely gratuitously . Charge for it , gentlemen , and it will be liked more . Buy the best magazines published in the World , Scribner s , and St . Nicholas . J . G . Hollands Sevenoaks contain the best timber in the market . St . Nicholas should send some of his warlike mice into Illinois . The Collegian , Mt . Vernon , Iowa , is a sound paper , but its contributors pay too much attention to good articles . Like many other students , they write as though they were veterans of a hundred years instructing the youth of the land in Art , Science and Religion . The College Herald has a good article on criticism . The spirit of fairness exhibited is worthy of imitation . Its editorial on the management of the college paper is candid , and just . The Alumni should not manage the college paper ; they may be connected with it , but should never contr...
