Berkshires and Iowa Farmers [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 April 1910
Berkshires and Iowa Farmers Address Made Before the Last Meeting of the American Berkshire Congress , by WAYNE DINSMORE , Associate Professor Dept . Animal Husbandry , Iowa State College . Prof . Wayne Dinsmore Gentlemen : —You have invited me to speak on the general subject , What type of Berkshire should the farmer use and what should the breeder do to interest the farmer in Berkshires ? As there are speakers here representing the other hog producing states , I shall confine most of my remarks to Iowa conditions . In presenting the following comparative data , I do so only to show you the magnitude of the Iowa market . As you are probably aware , Iowa leads all states in the Union in pork production . Carefully compiled estimates based on assessors figures gave the state , on January 1 st , 1909 , 7 , 908 , 000 swine , valued at $ 8 . 00 per head , a valuation of $ 63 , 264 , 000 . No other state even approaches this , Illinois being the only other state to exceed four million hea...

Hog Notes—By a Practical Hog Man [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 April 1910
Hog Notes—By a Practical Hog Man A . J . Lovejoy , Roscoe , 111 . About Type . I have been asked to write something regarding types in , Berkshires , and why if a car load of Berkshire barrows won the Grand Champion prize at the great International show in Chicago , that were extremely plain in the head , yet splendid specimens in other respects , why could not the same type win in breeding classes at our great shows ? The reason is so plain that it seems a novice could see it . First all car loads of hogs are judged by a stock yard s buyer who knows nor cares nothing about breed type ; he is simply looking for the load that Will make the least shrink ; that will dress out best , and give tne largest per cent of high priced meat , net , while the judge in breeding classes at our fairs is considering not only the quality of the animals competing , but the general breed character of them , knowing well the tendency of all hogs to revert to the mongrel type unless great care if exercis...

THE "PIG STY " [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 April 1910
THE PIG STY Size . The demand for hogs of greater size , bone and substance was never n . oie general among farmers than now . The trend to raising hogs of greater size with heavier bone and more substance and easier feeding qualities is evidenced in the increasing patronage going to the breeders who have heeded the call from farmers who raise and feed hogs for profit . All breeds and types must abide the test for usefulness on the farm and in the feed lot , and each must rise or fall upon the result . The breeders cf Berkshires have been enjoying the best trade of any class with the possible exception of the breeders of the larger type of Poland-Chinas . The success with which the breeders of the larger type of Poland-Chinas are gaining trade in the corn belt states has its lesson . It follows that if Berkshire breeders fail to meet the requirements of the farmers and feeders , the Berkshire will pass in history as a mere fanciers hog . The owners of herds of the big boned type hav...

Who s Who in Berkshires [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 April 1910
Who s Who in Berkshires Prior to 1899 , Highwood farm at Dundee , N . Y ., the home of H . C . & H . B . Harpending , was devoted to the breeding of Chester White Swine , a large registered herd being maintained there and at Tyrone Farm . At that time many of the Berkshires in that section were small and not very prolific and much prejudice existed against them on that account . In 1899 , Hon . Calvin J . Huson , owner of the well known Kalorama herd of Berkshires , induced them to put . a few Berkshires in the herd and compare their feeding qualities and general desirability with the Chester Whites . A fair test was made both at Highwood and at Tyrone farm , where H . S . Inscho , present manager of the Tyrone herd of Messrs . Harpending , was H . S . Inscho , Mgr . Tyrone Herd at Highwood at that time breeding Chester Whites . These gentlemen were soon- convinced that they should make a change and in 1900 disposed of the entire white herd from both farms . Continuously...
