Bent's company, lyinp on the sido of ono of the bever dams of tho Rio Orando of tho North (a j Etream emptying itself into the Gulf of California) I whose waters, it is said, possess the petrifying quali-1 tics to an eminent degree, its shores abounding in fpocimens of various animal and vegetable proaitc- 1 tions in a pctri&ed ttato. The petrified buffalo is described by those who have seen it, to be as perfect m its petrification as wnen living, until tno excep tion of a hole in one of tho sides, about four inches in diameter, around which the hMr has boon worn off, probably by the friction of the water, in which it must ha vo lain for ages past to have produced such a phenomenon.
