Af[B' VOL. YI. THE prohibition people seem well tat lsfied with the constitution adopted by the Sioux Falls convention, and Miss Cleveland proposes to hold mass meetings throughout Central Dakota to rally the temperance people to its support. She advocates dropping the word prohibition and using the term temperance instead. THE Bismarck Tribune of Sunday morn ing contains a lengthy and well written review of Judge Edgerton's decision on the quo warranto proceedings against the Capitol commissioners by G. W. N." It is rather late now to argue the question cxcept as a literary and intellectual exer cise, but it is well worthy of perusal though not by any means unanswerable. I- S-V" THE WEEKLY ALERT. J. O. WARNOCK, EDITOR. THE over zealous postmaster general Gresham may And that he has exceeded his authority in directing the posmastcr general at New Orleans to not deliver any letters to oc redeem any money oiders payable to the First National bank in that city because he has learned to his own satisfaction that said bank is receiv ing n'oney in that way for the Louisiana Sutc Lottery. This would effectually ciose bus'.uess correspondence of any character with that bank and it would be impossible to conduct its business. It would be a tine state of affairs if a bank or other business could be deprived of the advantage and privilege of the mails at the caprice and espionage of a self constituted autocrat. Such a thing might be done in Russia, but Mr. Gresham lias evidently forgotten that the people iu this country have rights which he is bound to respect. It is fortunate for the people that he has tackled au institution which has the wealth to test the a...

TUB Dulnth Tribuue remarks that "Dulutli is still here but where the d—1 is Villard?" Villard w.-i3 at that time on bis way to Wall street to lake a hand as a bull in the stock market against the bears who were trying to make the com mercial world believe that Duluth was the eastern terminus of a railroad that was not worth anything. Mr. Villard took no interest in the displays and champagne ovations on his way home Hia thoughts were upon weightier mat ters. A South Dakota paper remarks that a committee appointed by the constitutional convention was empowered, in case there was found to exist in North Daicota any considerable objection to that section as suming the name of Dakota for their State, to prefix the word "South." Jib! .1 'if -& VOL. VI. THE power of hot coffee and sandwiches aa an electioneering document will be tried by the ladies in Ohio to -day for the prohibition amendment. TUB bribery case in New York which created such a sensation during the Conklingand anti-Conkling contest in the legislature of that state two years ago is coming to a focus now and will prob ably disclose crookedness that is not al together peculiar to the legislature of that state. As the bribe was alleged to have been offered to tako away a vote from Conkling, it in no way directly or indirectly affects liim other than as a wrong attempted against him. IN reply to the question as to whether or not he was goingf to resign, As sistant Postmaster General Hatton says: "Not by a d—d sight." When a man couples ins declaration with such an em phatic adjective it may be regarded as his settled determination. tv i' "3————I———MM. 59 THE WEEKLY ALERT. J. 0. WAltNOCK, EDITOR. TnE Journal, of Detroit, Mich., Is en titled to the palm for something new on the capital situation in this territory. It •ays out in Dakota when a t'-aclicr is employed the question is asked, "Which do you teach is the capital, Bismarck or Yankton?" IT IS to be hoped that the appeal in the capital commission case will be heard the present term oT the supreme court, and settle the question one way or the other. The benefit of the doubt is in favor of Yankton now, and Bismarck can least at lord of the two to leave the matter so. The suspense will be a greater detriment to Bismarck than a decision against her. A rather novel suit for damages iias been brought in the district court in Bur leigh county, wherein a man who at tempted to stop a runaway team sus tained injuries by beiug struck by the wagon pole for which lie asks of the owners of the team $8,000 damages, it 18 generally conceded that a person who allows a ...

I'.f v/i '.-J* VOL. VI. Now every young man in America will want to study law. The law offices will be beset with readers of Ulackstone a»d the law schools will be crowded with pu pils. All this on account of a young law yer in Boston having married eight mil lions of dollars and a young lady with it. It is the largest "fee" any lawyer ever obtained in any one "suit" on the conti nent. Hqw long he has held a "retainer* in the "case" does not appear, but it is likely the time has been very "brief." Neither is it known when he "flled the declaration.*' As the young lady bad no parents living it was not necessary for him to "consult authorities," but he made an "oral argument" on the "merits of the case," guarding against a "non-suit" and "estopping" any "plea in abate ment.*' Having obtained the "judgment** that what was hers is his and what Is his is his own, he ean well afford to meet any "collateral issues" that may arise or "trespass" that inay be attempted b7 a "priority clai...

TIIK Yankton Herald is making war upon the constitution framed at Sioux Falls, because it gives it into the power of the legislature to discriminate in favor of railroad corporations in the way of taxation the same as was done by the tax law passed by the territorial legislature. It is showing up the record of some of the delegates at the convention on this question in an entertaining manner. The people all over the territory are becoming aroused upon the question and wo appre hend there will be a thorough shaking up of the dry bones in the election »f the next legislature. At the election tins fall one com missioner is to be clected and that from the first district which is composed of all that part of ranges 62 and 63 within Stutsman county lying east of the Jnmes river, and only those who reside within those bounds will be entitled to vote for commissioner.
