nustfcnd sbsll be preserved. Cheers. We have seen, my fellow-citizens, that tho' election of a Black Republican, as he is called, foythe Speakership of the House of Representatives at least has BOt produced a disruption, and we shall see hereafter, even if a Black Republi-j can President shallbcr elevated "into the White House,' that the Union will still be savedi- Cheers.. If however, large partita may-be divided in the North by name, there is no division in sentiment a? regards the maintenance of the Constitution and tho Union. Cries of "Good," and cheers. Nor is there a divided South ; for I tell you whether parties in that section be called American or Democratic, they all fight under the same banner, and are enlisted for the maintenance of a single policy, Cries of "That's so." . So ia the North, when the time comes yon will find the divisions have disappeared, and If there be a single man there who Shall descend from the policy which it will then become our duty to pursue, we ...

Pleasure of Skating.- Perhaps the local of the Milwaukee Seas cannot give his views of skating, Sfcd; then aain perhaps he can. . It s the' oest pen and ink portrait of skat ing that we have seen : . , " Ru;fit beneath one of our windows, : front morn till midnight, we see young sters and oldsters twisting their legs Into all concefvable shapes, skating np and down the river merry as lambs. We cannot pick p a paper, but an ar ticle on ' skating" meets the eye. Everybody says it is fun, and that's all "everybody" knows about it, for, we hatte tried it. Last night, about gas light time, after rcading'a glowing des cription of life on skates, we prepared for onr first attempt, and sallied forth to join the merry crowd. We had on a pair of stoga boots, . troitser legs tucked inside, a robeit-tailed coat and white hat. We went down on the ice, and gave a boy two- shillings in good coin of the realm, for the use of his Implement?.- We have conGdence, even as great as Peter's faith. We wit...

Grow, of Pennsylvania, made one of the best speeches ever de Hrered ia Congress, or out of it, in de fense of the policy of "Free Homes for Free men," on Wednesday of last vreek. It is a subject that he has carefully ex amined and one in which he has taken a deep interest for many years. As an introduction to the discussion of the main proposition, he gives an historical sketch of our Public Land system, which shows a good deal of research, aud is at once interesting and valuable. From this sketch it appears that the Federal Government, by cessions from the original States, and by the purchase of Louisiana, Florida, California, New Mexico, and Utah, has acquired, exclu sive of water, 1,450,000,000 acres of public land. Of these, there have been sold 147,088,274 acres; while there have been granted and donated to individ nals, companies, corporations, and States, 241,770,052 acres. -This leaves undisposed of, and now in the poss...
