Vested Rights—No. 3. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Herald — 14 October 1873

Vested Rights—No. 3. Huving endeavored to give some of the grounds upon which the claim to vested rights are acquired by private ocrporat ions from the legislative power let us look and learn if the people have not some remaining rights in railroad*. Although our courts have generally held thai an unlimited right or franchise granted by the legislature is beyond the repeal of ■ subsequent legislature, they have recognized the power of cancellation as existing in Unpeople, in their sovereign capacity. They have not placed the remedy beyond the reach of the people, bin have removed it to the extreme limit of the power of that people, and to a point where its application is difficult and accompanied with long delay. The Supreme Court of the United States, iv v ease when it was contended that atl act of the State Legislature was void, said: "We are not the guardians of the rights of the people of the State, unless they are secured hy some constitutional provision which comes within our ...

Lord Byron's Letter. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Herald — 14 October 1873

Lord Byron's Letter. Makysviixk, Oct. 10th, 1873. EDITOB Hhkald:—The letter referred to is, perhaps, better known than auy other of Lord Hyron's. Au curly edition of his works, published übout 1835, contained a facsimile of it, one of which is doubtless the "original" in your library. The letter may also be found in Byron's works—Phillips, Sampson A Co., Boston, 1854. It was written five years before his death, and four years before he went to Greece. Bkppo. [There is no doubt that the letter published in these columns is from the original MS. If "Beppo" would like to see it, he perhaps could arrange with Mrs. King for its transmission to Marysville by express, on a guarantee for its safe return. With regard to its having been published before, no doubt our correspondent is quite right.- En. HI ha I. D. ] Bough lumber is quoted ut $17 50 per thousand in Sauta Barbura. This low price is a Uod-send to persons of limited means desirous of building homes. The Indian reservation at Skoko...
