Big cut* seen School district funds in doubt [Newspaper Article] — Belvedere Citizen / Eastside Journal — 23 January 1980

Big cut* seen School district funds in doubt The SO percent of Los Angeles School District’s budget which comes from the state o I California is very much in question at this time because of uncertainties over state income, the school board was told Monday night by its budget staff. Because of the uncertainties, budget director Richard Caldwell said, the district could face anywhere from a $6O million to a* $390 million shortage in funding to meet what it considers essential costs in nest year’s program. If there is no change in state income, according to district figures, the schools will need an additional $105.8 million, and will be receiving only an additional $45.8 million, leaving the $6B million gap. Most of the additional funds needed would go to provide what the district calls a “norminal cost of living adjustment" for teachers and staff members. “Norminal” was later defined as 6 percent by Caldwell. $83.1 Million Providing the pay raise, and maintaining existing health, de...

Seek funds to repair RHSpool [Newspaper Article] — Belvedere Citizen / Eastside Journal — 23 January 1980

Seek funds to repair RHSpool Los Angeles City Recreation and Park Commissioners have asked the Mayor and City Council to appropriate $120,000 to cover the cost of repairing the damaged Roosevelt High School Swimming Pool, Councilman Arthur K. Commissioners pointed out that the Roosevelt Pool, which was completed in 1977, has been damaged by a bulge at the bottom of the pool. The pool, which is open year-round and is used by the high school, as well as for recreational swimming, has been closed since Dec. 17 when the bulge was first reported in the bottom of the pool. The Recreation and Parks Department’s Planning and Development staff has requested the City Attorney’s office to look into the legal aspect of the pool damage to determine whether failure was due to design...
