Character of John Brown in a New Aspect, [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 24 December 1859

Character of John Brown in a New Aspect, The following is a copy of a letter recently received by a prominent citizen of this State: Kansas City, Mo., Nov. 2, 1859.— Though unknown to you personally, the motive which prompts me—a desire to see an exampled villain receive his deserts at the hands of justice—will I hope, be my pardoned excuse for this letter. By the telegraph I see John Brown's pluck, "as exhibited in his trial and the late disturbance at Harper's Ferry, have excited in your breast, as would naturally be the case with every ehivalric man, an admiring sympathy. My purpose is to relate to you a passage in Brown's life that may place his true character before you. He stated in his conversation with Senator Mason, Mr. Vallandigham and others, that, save in fair fight, he never shed human blood. In June, 1826, a series of the most dastardly murders were perpetrated on Pottawottomie Creek. Mr. Wilkinson, a quiet and inoffensive farmer, who had never taken up arms in Kansas,...

FARQUAR'S MEDICATED CALIFORNIA ffl 11 BRANDY! A delicious Tonic Hitter: Juice of the Grape, medicated with Juniper, Rhubarb, nnd Peruvian Bark, lor Invalids. "Good Wine neetls no hush.'' BUT in this age of quackery and humbug, it is necessary to at least state the virtues or qualities of even a well known article, and certainly the California Grape could lay claim to this title. I believe, indeed, I know from experience, that its juice produces a purer, less hurtful, and more exhilarating and healthful beverage than nine-tenths of the stuff imported and imitated in the United States. If this can be said of the wine usually sold, what cannot be said of Brandies? Pah ! the very thought is significant of poison. Hut to the purpose. Or. Jns. L. The Eye is the Window of the Soul. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 31 December 1859

The Eye is the Window of the Soul. TYPO QUILL. The tongue of eloquence may thrill, The poet's mystic pen inspire ; Yet words belie the heart at will, And fancy rules the wak'ning lyre. But if you would behold the mind, — Its secret, silent springs espy, — Its true reflections you will find Upon the canvass of the eye. As low'ring clouds obscure the skies, When flash and peal above control, So somber shades hang o'er the eyes, When sorrow's Storms distract the soul. And as the rainbow's glowing form Speaks, through tears, of a shining sun, So hopeful eyes, above a storm, Bespeak the calm that's soon to ci>me. And thus you'll find, in light or shads, — In friendship w arm or censure cold, — In cv'ry one of ev'ry grade, The Eye t the Window of the Soul! Visalia, Dec. 26, 1839.

The New York Tribune. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 31 December 1859

The New York Tribune. The Tribune " irrepressible con&ict'' school of politics, concludes an editorial article on the late insurrection at Harper's Ferry, in Virginia, headed and led by Ossawatime Brown, in the following strain: "But, remembering that, if their fault was grievous, grievously have they answered it, we will not, by one reproachful word, disturb the bloody shrouds wherein John Brown and his compatriots are sleeping*— They dared and died fur what they deemed to be the right, though in a manner which seems to be fatally wrong. Let their epitaphs remain unwritten until the not distant day when no stove shall clank his chains in the shades of Monticeilo or by the graves of Mount Vernon. 1 ' "Let their epitaph* remain unwritten."— All patriots will protest against any such sentiments, and will demand that their epitaphs he written, in unfading letters, somewhat after the following style : "Here lie the traitors, General John Brown and Captains , Black Republican...
