She Items. DENISON, FRIDAY MARCH 39 1878. Mr. Moody, the revivalist, is down on the plan of trying to help churches by fair#, "oyster suppers," theatii- cals, and other worldly entertain- ments. He says, "though these may do some good, they do more harm. They attract the worldly, it is true ; but that little good is counterbal- anced by the evil* of example and temptation to those who would oth- erwise never enter into such scenes." We think Mr. Moody carries his theories decidedly too far. The age when to be a member of a Christian church signified that we must go through the world as though dressed in a straight-jacket, with a face a foot long, belongs to the oast. A relig- ious man should not be in sackcloth and ashes all his life. Recreations are highly important nuxilaries for the promotion of happiness in this mundain existence, and the peop .e will have them. If the churches for- bid them, church members will seek them elsewhere. Instead of church fairs, oyster suppers, and e...
