POPULATION 5,000. VoL. IV.—No. 29. THURBER, TEXAS: SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 1900. WHOLH No. 185. FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC NEWS NOTES AND COMMENT Now THAT John Bull has struck his gait, Oom Paul would bet- ter open negotiations for peace. IF ANYBODY supposed the Senatorial talking machinery was out of order, they now know better. THE Paris Exposition is billed to open in April, but it will probably not get fully started before June. IT is said that Senator Oullom, who has held office for forty years, wishes to complete the half century. THIS year the politicians have no bigger game than the Vice- Presidency to wrangle over, but they are making the most of that. SENATOR HALE, who was a vigorous opponent of the war with Spain, is now accused of trying to bring on a war with England. ACCORDING to the annual report of the Civil Service Commis- sion there are now 75,000 positions in the classified service of the United States. THE most important thing to remember in every discussion is that the ...

TEXAS MINING AND TRADE JOURNAL. The "Beverage" Departments. Among the numerous improvements under way in Thurber none are more extensive, perhaps than at Saloons Nos. 1 and 2, and especially the cold storage room at No. 1. This is the largest brick structure in camp, having been built last year under spec- ial design to answer the purpose for which it is used. No place in the larger cities is better equipped than is this saloon, being two stories, and with all apartments complete for the comfort of its patrons, and Manager J. M. Britton and his assistants see to it that the conduct about the place is such as not to offend the most sensitive. But this is all well known, and it is not our pur- pose to dwell on this feature, but upon an equally as important one—that of recent improvements and enlargements. Aside from the general interior, which is quite pleasing to the eye, Mr. Britton ("Grude") has caused to be built a cold storage, or ice vault, after the most improved methods, and A...

TEXAS MINING AND TRADE JOURNAL. NEWSY NOTES RENDERED READABLE. ^T*^H E value of the gold coin that has disappeared since the i Mints of the United States were established is $1,214,662,- 708. The missing money has been used in the arts, exported, hoarded and lost. HT^HE "Appalachian National Park Association" has been 1 formed to urge the establishment of a national park in the mountains of Western North Carolina. It gives a list of 43 peaks over 6000 feet high, forest-clad and exceptionally beautiful in scenery. ^T*^HE British officers are taking each an air mattress and pil- 1 low, several pairs of shoes, a looking glass, three or four books on tactics and many other little trifles to the front. Oom Paul's men take only their rifles and ammunition, but they carry back fine British outfits. ^T^HE influence of the Administration is being exerted in be- i half of the Payne bill, now before the House Ways and Means Committee, providing for an extension of the United States law to Puer...

THE State of Texas is fortunate in having for its Senior Sen- ator a man who commands the highest respect of his brother Senators of both political parties. There may be more brilliant men in the Senate than Mr. Chilton; there are scarcely any more useful, more clear-headed, more industrious or more in- tent on rendering faithful services to his people. He is a mem- ber of two of the most important committees of the Senate—the Finance and Judiciary—and also has membership on the Inter- State Commerce committee. His record at Washington is in the highest degree meritorious, and stamps him as a Statesman of clear vision and broad views. Mr. C...

TEXAS MINING AND TRADE JOURNAL. WASHHNGTON LETTER. WASHINGTON, JANUARY 29, 1900. "WORK" OF THE HOUSE. ^T^HREE days to talk about the Roberts case and to turn him out; two days to eulogize the late Vice President Hobart, and the late Representative Baird of Louisiana, and one day to local legislation for the District of Columbia— which ought to be in the hands of the local legislative body. That is the record of the week in the House. The Senate spent the most of the four days it was in session in talk. It pass ed the urgency deficiency bill, and then it talked—about the financ e bill, about the Philippines, about the North Carolina suffrage amendment, and even had a little fling at the old bloody shirt. The greater portion of one day was given over to party caucus- ing by the Senators, both bodies holding caucuses at the same time, leaving Senator Teller, who attends neither, the sole oc- cupant of the Senate floor for an hour or two. That is a week's record of the Senate. CASES UND...

TEXAS MINING AND TRADE JOURNAL. CRUMBS OF COMFORT FOR THE ECONOMICAL Every sensible man is thoughtful over his personal appearance. It is often his capital, his stock in trade. At times quite a question of economy; and a man abandons the idea of tailor-made garments on account of the high prices asked by the average tailor, and resorts to a make-shift in the shape of a ready-made suit. A matter of false economy. M. BORN & CO. THE GREAT CH!CAG0 MEMHAMT TAtLORS make it possible for every man to have his clothing made to measure. Their Put! Line of Samptes has just been received and contains every element of worth. It was never so large or so complete a plentitude of all the novelties the market affords, and at prices that are never equalled — quality always considered. Twenty-three years of experience in one particular line, has es- tablished for M. Born & Co. a reputation for honest and liberal treatment. Every garment is guaranteed to At and give entire satisfaction, or they...

IjAJÍD :: POPULATION 5,000. yOL. IV. No. 30. Thurber, Texas: Saturday, February 10, 1900. Whole No. 186 FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC NEWS NOTES AND COMMENT Senator Tillman has been stirring up the Philippine ques- tion with his little pitchfork. It doesn't seem to make any difference who is the Emperor of China, as the Dowager Empress is the real ruler. The American people consume 4,000,000 bushels of peanuts a year, and not all of them are sold at circuses, either. The English are trying to console themselves for defeats in South Africa by the capture of Osman Digna, in Egypt. Some men never know when they have been kicked enough. Roberts, the polygamist, is talking of going to the United States Supreme Court in search of vindication. __ Inquisivive persons are asking why Field Marshall Lord Roberts, the British Commander in South Africa, remains at Cape Town, instead of going to the front. A Charleston jockey club has endowed a library with a rich donation of #100,000. It will doubtless c...

TEXAS MININO AND TRADE JOURNAL. Wednesday Club Valentine Party. The ladies of the Wednesday club will give a Valentine party on the night of the 14th. They so decided at their meeting this week. Now, they are arranging a program novel, interesting and unique. Just what this program is they will not say, but look at each other knowingly, suppress all save evidences of mirth, and say: "Tell everybody they sure will have a good time." They have not decided just where it will be given—but either at the old Town Hall, Union church, or at the home of the Club president, Mrs. Woodson. This place, however, will be heralded in time, for you know when women begin to talk a thing, newspapers are "not in it" in comparison. There will be a small admission charged at the door, refreshments served, a Valentine postoffice, games, and all that sort of thing and every- thing, you know. This will be the Wednesday club's initial public "to-do," and they propose the fund thus raised shall be applied to ...
