Stud ent Letter s Look Beyond Outside by Margarita Garcia I realize I cannot change the world through this letter but I can open the eyes and heart of a reader which is a completion of my goal. There is something I cannot understand and never want to: the dislike for human beings because of the color of their skin. It angers saddens and disgusts me. Why can't we appreciate people for who they are despite the color of their skin? Why can't we look beyond the outside and look on the inside for once? I believe when you look on the inside you will find an individual-someone who dreams and is struggling through life just as you are. I have never seen or faced so much prejudice in all my life as I have here at Hardin-Simmons and it angers me. I am through dwelling on my anger and am raising my head up high standing tall with pride because I am me brown black red or white. I am me and proud of it I am an individual who has a purpose in life. I have a right to dream think succeed and love l...

Vol. 78 No. 8 Oct. 24 1990 Student Voice of Har din-Simmons University Cowboy Band Plans Year by JeffEgger The HSU Cowboy Band acquired the nickname "World Famous" after its European tour in 1930 and since that time has performed in forty states eight capitals of the world ten foreign countries and as far north as ten miles from the Arctic Circle. Since the band's inception it has been an important and active part of the Big Country and Abilene as it has marched in presidential and gubernatorial inauguration nationally televised football games and a host of parades and other festive affairs. In 1923 Grady Kinsolving secretary of the Abilene Chamber of Commerce asked the band to represent Abilene at a West Texas Chamber of Commerce gathering in San Angeloquite an honor considering the fact that the little band had previously ventured no farther than Baird Tuscola and View traveling by train and horsedrawn coach. In looking about for some distinctive yet affordable uniforms a visit to...

Holy Soldier. Holy Soldier Reviewed by Kevin Burfield Add another heavy metal band to your collection of Christian groups; here comes Holy Soldier. The theme of this package is "Stranger " the first selection. The band sings against abortion in "See No Evil." They include a six and a half minute ballad entitled "The Pain Inside of Me." " Eyes of Innocence" takes one back to childhood days while the judgement day is emphasized in "When the Reign Comes Down." Lead singer Steven Patrick left the busy group after the release of this album to be with his wife as she just had their first child. Fortunately Holy Soldier already has a new lead vocalist Patrick's voice on this self-titled debut makes this a worthwhile addition to the Christian metal scene. The album though hard also touches one with a message of pain in relationships through certain selections. The five-man group ends their release album with a sound that personifies the song title "We Are Young We Are Strong." Dana Key: The...

Noises On The P a g e - Brand Process Revealed by Duane Simolke There were some questions about why we didn't mention HSU's football victory over McMurry in our last issue. There have also been questions about our deadline and our publication schedule. Before I move on let me say congrats to the Cowboys. No one expected this "new inexperienced' team to win at all but they've already claimed two victories. c The Brand is published twelve times a semester Wednesdays at 2 p.m. That isn't every week but it's as close as we can get without risking our G.P.A.'s. Wednesday night I begin typing my own columns so I can turn in printed 1 versions of them Thursday morning for my assistant editors Leigh Ann Whiddon and Rick Hope to proofread. Everything else is due Thursday at 5. I'll proofread type anything else that needs to be typed do printouts at the Computer Lab then have it proofread Friday morning. Tim Baker and I do the initial layout on Friday afternoon after I've typed in all the cor...

Richard's Nameless Column Alumni Provide Examples by Richard Ruane Well it's Homecoming week time for Sing football and parents. It's also time for that group of people who we all wish to be part of some day: the alumni. This school has a lot of alumni who we should all really appreciate. They endow scholarships build buildings and help graduates find jobs. Without many of our alumni our school probably wouldn't be here. But (I know there's always a but) somewhere among the buildings endowments and successful alumni clubs I think we forgot something. I'm not sure I can define it in so many words instead I want to tell you a story and show you. It's a true story of two HSU graduates from the 1970's. They married after they graduated and now he's running a small tree-trimming and extermination business out of his home here in Abilene. She sews cooks caters quilts and does arts and crafts. They moved back to Abilene in the early 80's and joined First Baptist. Shortly thereafter they as...

Teen Pregnancy Studied by Jeff Egger "Teenage pregnancy within the United ' States is rising at an alarming rate" said Marie Heimerdinger an instructor at the Abilene Intercollegiate School of Nursing (AISN). Abilene has the highest rate of teen pregnancy in Texas. The School of Nursing along with the West Texas Girl Scout Council and the Hogg Foundation in Austin work with .teenage mothers to help them cope with having children to raise. The program evolves from a summer camp for pregnant teenagers or teen mothers with children. AISN is working on a one-to-one basis with eight teenage mothers in the Abilene area. At present all of the mothers are still in school in Abilene independent high schools. Seven senior year nurses in their senior year are participating in the program. The students help provide support for the teenagers in areas such as looking for housing if they have no place to live and how to apply for food stamps if they need them. The students also teach the young mot...

student L e t t e r Forgiveness and Sin by John Carroll Boy am I mad at you guys! I read my letter in The Brand and you left two sentences out. Do you guys think Mark Twain could have become famous if his publisher had omitted whole sentences? I have been thinking about this for several hours and have tried to think of what would be an appropriate action on my part. I finally remembered what my father told me: "Anything you need is in the Bible." After much reading and study I found out I have to forgive you guys 70 times seven which gives you 489 more chances before I read the part about an eye for an eye. On a more serious note can you believe how Congress and the president are going to raise "sin" taxes? Financing the whole government by taxing "sin" would be a good idea in my opinion. Of course we would have to tax more sins than just smoking and drinking. It would only be fair to vary the tax according to the severity of the sin. Maybe a $5 tax for cheating in school $100 for s...

Photo courtesy of HSU Media Relations. Concert Band by Shawnie Maffett The HSU Concert Band is an integral part of HSU's School of Music which is one of the oldest members in the National Association of Schools of Music. The major quest of this 50 person ensemble is an enjoyable high quality musical experience brought about through the performance of the best in band literature. An average of three on-campus performances are given each year with the addition of a brief appearance at Homecoming. This year United States Army Band Leader and Commander Colonel L. Bryan Shelburne Jr. an HSU alumnus conducted the Concert Band during Homecoming. Shelburne was nominated by the Distinguished Graduate Record Board and HSU gave him recognition. "It was a real coming home to me" he said. Performing Shelburne was a member of the Cowbo...

ILL Finds Needed Materials by Kevin Burfield When people think of the library their first thought is probably a place to retrieve certain materials needed to complete assignment tasks. But what if they are unable to find these materials in town? This is where Interlibrary Loan comes in. Interlibrary Loan is a service designed to help people fmd book or periodical materials which are not found in the four existing libraries around town. Students who need certain books or articles may fill out a request form in which they supply necessary information such as author title pages and year of publication. On the form they write where they may be reached and how much they are willing to pay for the materials. In most cases the materials supplied are free though certain libraries sometimes charge. Unlike graduates undergraduates must have a professor authorize their requests. This service is also for the faculty and has proven to be a major help for all who use it The requests go to Elaine ...

Windham: Here For Students by Rick Hope For the first time ever HSU has appointed someone to the position of student advocate: Dr. Paula Windham. Windham said the student advocate is responsible for representing students individually or collectively who feel that their rights have been violated. When working with students in this position Windham said she hopes to help students with their different situations by taking them through the proper channels. "If the problem is with a professor I am going to encourage them to go with me to visit that professor" said Windham. "If the problem is with housing or an academic area I will be talking to the staff member in charge." Windham said she will basically help students reach compromises with faculty or staff as different situations arise. "We have a pretty caring faculty and staff" said Windham. "I can't imagine I will be needed for much. But I am here for students when needed." Students wishing to visit with Dr. Windham may find her in h...

Vol. 78 No. 11 Nov. 14 1990 Student Voice of Hardin-Simmons University Shelton Crowned As HSU's New Queen by Duane Simolke Midland resident Kristi Shelton was recently crowned University Queen a position in which she will represent HSU. She admits to not listening when the nominees were given instructions for what to do if pronounced queen because she did not think she would be chosen. "I was shocked" said Shelton a senior majoring in English and minoring in physical education. "I was sitting in my chair looking at the other girls because I wanted to see their reactions. "One of the best things is I really got to know the other girls rather than just say 'hi' and 'bye.' My family got to come down and (so did) probably my dearest friend from Baylor." Shelton said she appreciated the support of her friends and family and of everyone at HSU. "I just wanted to thank everyone" she said. "I feel honored to represent them." Shelton had prayed constantly about where she could go to college....

Music Revi e w sL Dr. Edward Daniel Taylor. The Miracle Faith Telethon Reviewed by Duane Simolke Looking for some bland predictable formulaic music? Look elsewhere. Terry Scott "Camarillo Eddy" Taylor lead singerlyricist of the Swirling Eddies and Daniel Amos (Da) has assembled nearly 70 minutes of outtakes remixes alternate versions and unreleased songs from both bands and from his second solo album. Part of the album's unusual length is consumed by comedy skits of the fictional Dr. Edward Daniel Taylor the epitome of self-righteousness. The skits are funny but do not warrant the repeated listening most of the songs demand. The remake of the Swirling Eddies classic "Big Guns" does not warrant one listening. "Sprinkler Head" the heavy metal spoof Taylor co-wrote for Isaac Air Freight is for occasional listening only. Even without those cuts there is still more than an album's worth of innovative and eclectic music left. The strongest cut is "Soon" a ballad about the return of Christ...

Staff Vie wB HSU Parents Neglected by Leigh Ann Whiddon Congratulations to all the people who made Homecoming a success. I believe all the alumni who attended thoroughly enjoyed the programs and events planned for them. However I was under the impression that Nov. 2 and 3 was also Family Weekend. Everywhere I looked I saw the word "alumni:" "Welcome Alumni" alumni registration alumni teas and coffees for everyone ranging from social club members to geology majors and ex-lettermen. Registration packets were available for alumni. The schedule distributed to all alumni was labeled ."Centennial Homecoming Schedule." As I look back on all of this I see one very important group of people who traveled just as far have contributed just as much to the school (in the way of providing students and tuition money) and were just as excited to come to the weekend as the alumni were: the parents. In the past an entire weekend was set aside for parents to come and visit their kids and the school. Pa...
